6. Find the required air-fuel ratio in a gas turbine
whose turbine and compressor efficiencies are
85% and 80% respectively. Maximum cycle
temperature is 875°C. The working fluid can be
taken as air (Cp = 1.0 kJ/kg K, y = 1.4) which
enters the compressor at 1 bar and 27°C. The
pressure ratio is 4. The fuel has calorific value of
42,000 kJ/kg. There is a loss of 10% of calorific
value in the combustion chamber. 10

9. (a) How does the mixture composition in the
combustion chamber of a CI engine differ
from that of an SI engine ?
(b) "The factors that tend to increase
detonation in SI engine tend to reduce
knocking in CI engine." Discuss the above
statement with reference to the following
influencing factors :
(i) Compression ratio
(ii) Inlet temperature
(iii) Inlet pressure
(iv) Self-ignition temperature of fuel
(v) Combustion chamber wall
temperature
10. (a) Why is the rate of pressure rise during
combustion limited to a certain value ? 5
(b) What do you mean by adiabatic flame
temperature and what is its significance ? 5
