Tremedal Media and Information Literacy

STEM 12 – Faraday

Activity 1: Media Then

Guide Questions:
1. If the titanic sank somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, how do you think the news reached
the people in England and New York at that time? (Sample answers: telephone, letter,
newspaper etc.)
- In 1912, when news of the Titanic's tragic sinking broke, it reached people in
England and New York through a variety of communication channels. Telegrams were
instrumental in swiftly transmitting information, while newspapers published special editions
with headlines that informed the public. Additionally, word of mouth played a crucial role as
survivors and crew members shared their firsthand accounts within their communities. Letters
from survivors and relatives also contributed to the dissemination of information, albeit at a
slower pace.
2. If the titanic sank today, in what format would people receive or read the news?
- Fast forward to today, if the Titanic were to sink, news of the disaster would spread
rapidly through the modern digital landscape. Social media platforms would be inundated
with updates, images, and videos, while news websites would provide comprehensive
coverage. Television broadcasts would interrupt regular programming for live reports, and
mobile apps would send push notifications to keep people informed. Online forums and chat
apps would facilitate discussions and the sharing of information, creating a multifaceted and
immediate flow of news to the global audience.
