Global Health Initiatives: Millennium Development Goals

Global Health Initiatives these are programs and projects which help address global health issues,
concerns, and trends. Global health is the understanding of health care in an international and
interdisciplinary context.

World Health Organization (WHO) The primary international body responsible for developing leadership
in health, setting norms and standards, and providing health support among nations around the world.

Health Trends, Issues, and Concerns (Global Level)

The Global Fight against Communicable Diseases

Roll Back Malaria is a global project that aims to reduce the number of deaths from malaria infections
through heightened prevention tools, rapid response to outbreaks, development of new anti-malarial
products and effective treatment of the infection.

Stop TB is a global effort to prevent further transmission of tuberculosis or TB around the world. TB-DOTS
(Tuberculosis-Directly Observed Treatment Strategy) is a short-course strategy under the Stop TB program.

Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) GAVI is a global strategy which aims to
strengthen children’s immunization programs and introduce new generation of licensed vaccines into use in
developing countries across the globe.
The following are the vaccines developed to reduce the number of children’s death aged 5 years old and
below:
• Hepatitis B vaccine
• Childhood meningitis vaccine
• Yellow fever vaccine
• Influenza vaccine
• Pneumonia vaccine

The Global Funds to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria is a funding project rather than initiative.
Nevertheless, it helps in the prevention, reduction, and mitigation of the negative impacts of the three
diseases to humanity thus contributes to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals.

The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO


FCTC) is the prime international treaty negotiated under WHO. The WHO FCTC came into
existence in reaction to the global epidemic of tobacco use and abuse.

The Global Strategy to Reduce the Harmful Use of Alcohol recognizes the close ties between the harmful
use of alcohol and the socio-economic development of a nation.

The Global Strategy for the Prevention and Control of Non- Communicable Diseases is a global action
plan to prevent and control the following non-communicable diseases: cardiovascular diseases, chronic
respiratory diseases, cancers, and diabetes and the four shared risk factors: unhealthy eating, physical
inactivity, tobacco use and alcohol use.

The Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 is the result of extensive research and
consultations by stakeholders, member-nations, academic and non-government centers across the globe. The
mental health action plan should be impartial, life-based, and preventive in nature.

• Electronic Music is a type of music that employs electronic musical instruments, digital
instruments, or circuitry – based music technology.
• Dissonance - It is described as the impression of stability and repose in relation to the impression of
tension or clash experienced by a listener when certain combinations of tones or notes are sounded
together.

ARTS
• Rajo Laurel - is best known to the general public as a judge on the television series Project
Runway Philippines. Also a much-admired Filipino fashion designer with a number of national and
international awards to his name.
• Josie Natori - The Filipino-American fashion designer who began her career as an investment
banker before she made the dramatic shift to creating her own lines of lingerie, resort and lounge
wear, as well as semi-formal and casual attire.
• Monique Lhuillier - The Filipina fashion designer from Cebu City who first rose to prominence for
her exquisite wedding gowns
• Kenneth Cabonpue - A multi-awarded designer and the creative director of Hive, a design and
manufacturing facility for designers of interior accessories and lighting.
• Tony Velasquez – Father of Filipino comics
• Komiks - It is locally known as the Filipino comic book
• George Tapan - He is an award-winning travel photographer who has won two Pacific AsiaTourism
Association (PATA) Gold.
• John K. Chua - He is best known as an advertising and commercial photographer, with over 40
years of experience in this field and numerous local and international award for his work.
• Editing - It is an allied art which involves selecting, sequencing, and joining shots together to
achieve the director's desired visual and emotional effect.
• Lino Brocka - One of the Philippine Filmmakers who directed Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang in
1974
• Animation - is the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or
models to create an illusion of movement when the movie is shown as a sequence.
• Kinetoscope - is a peepshow cabinet with an eyehole through which these earliest “movies” could
be viewed one person at a time.
• Photography is derived from the Greek word “photos,” meaning light, and “graphos,” drawing

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
• Street dance - It is an informal and stylized dance moves that evolve outside dance studios.

best known for its impact on music in the form of the musical genre, rap.
- It is composed of the pillars such as DJ-ing or turntables, rapping, breaking and graffiti
art.
- It includes B-boying, Popping, Locking, Shuffling, Krumping, Tutting, and Waacking.
• Breakdancing - It is a style of dancing that includes gymnastic moves, head spins and backspins.
• Graffiti art - It is a visual art, an expression of youth culture and rebellion in public places.

HEALTH
• Innovation for Uptake, Scale and Equity in Immunization global health initiative finances and
facilitates delivery platforms for vaccines.
• Accelerating the end of AIDS, TB, Malaria as epidemics health initiative gives financial
assistance to partner countries and agencies in fighting TB, Malaria and other epidemics.
• Alliance for Healthy Cities global health initiative encourages local governments to incorporate
health issues and health concerns into all aspects of public policy.
