SHAPE OF TEETH

DEVELOPMENTAL DISTURBANCES
DURING MORPHODIFFERENTIATION
• MICRODONTIA. AFFECTING TOOTH SIZE

• MACRODONTIA.
• DENSE IN DENTE.
• DENSE EVAGINATUS. AFFECTING TOOTH
SHAPE
• TAURODONTISM.
• DILACERATION.
• CONGENITAL SYPHILIS.
GEMINATION

Twinning
Gemination and twinning
• Attempt of division of tooth bud into two by
invagination with resultant formation of two
teeth.

• Twinning – complete division of tooth germ

forming one normal and one supernumerary
tooth.
Fusion
• Union of two normally seperated tooth
germs.
• Complete or incomplete.
• Due to pressure producing contact between
developing teeth.
• Common in deciduous dentition.
Findings??
Concrescence
• Teeth are united by cementum.
• Fusion occuring after root formation.
• Due to trauma or crowding of teeth with
resorption of interdental bone.
Dilaceration

• Angulation or sharp bend in root or crown of

a formed tooth.
• Due to trauma which changes the position of
tooth bud and thereafter rest of the portion
of tooth forms at an angle.
Findings??
Talon cusp
• Anomalous structure resembling eagles talon
projecting from the cingulum area of maxillary
or mandibular permanent incisor.
• Contain normal enamel dentin and pulp horn.
Talon cusp
• It poses problems of esthetics, occlusion and
caries. ( acc to Mellor and Ripa).
• Associated with syndromes like
Rubinstein Taybe syndrome
Mohr syndrome.
Dense in Dente (dens invaginatus, dilated
composite odontome)
• Invagination of surface of tooth crown before
calcification has occured.
• Due to increased external pressure or focal
growth stimulation or focal retardation in
areas of tooth bud.

• Most common in maxillary lateral incisor.

• In root due to invagination of HERS

Dens Evaginatus/ Leongs premolar
• Appear as a an accessory cusp or globule of
enamel on the occlusal surface between
buccal and lingual cusps of premolar.
• Due to proliferation and evagination of IEE
and ectomesenchyme into enamel organ.
• May cause incomplete eruption, pulpal
exposure following occlusal wear.
Taurodontism
• Body of the tooth is enlarged at the expense
of the roots.
• Bull teeth.
• 3 forms Acc to Shaw- hypotaurodont
- mesotaurodont
- hypertaurodont
• Commonly involves permanent molars.
• Tooth appears rectangular without cervical
constriction.
• Short roots.
• Associated with Kleinfelters syndrome.
Ectopic enamel
Lack of degeneration of Hertwig’s
Epithelial Root sheath (HERS) after root
dentin formation

Root dentin influences Inner enamel

epithelium of persisiting HERS to form
enamel by reciprocal induction

Enamel formed on root at this pointof

lack of degeneration of HERS- ectopic
enamel
