FOREWORD

PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) has been developed based on the accumulated knowledge,
experience and best practices of the PETRONAS group supplementing National and International
standards where appropriate. The key objective of PTS is to ensure standard technical practice
across the PETRONAS group.

Compliance to PTS is compulsory for PETRONAS-operated facilities and Joint Ventures (JVs) where
PETRONAS has more than fifty percent (50%) shareholding and/or operational control, and includes
all phases of work activities.

y
nl
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers who use PTS are solely responsible in ensuring the quality of

O
work, goods and services meet the required design and engineering standards. In the case where
specific requirements are not covered in the PTS, it is the responsibility of the

se
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers to propose other proven or internationally established
standards or practices of the same level of quality and integrity as reflected in the PTS.

lU
In issuing and making the PTS available, PETRONAS is not making any warranty on the accuracy or
na
completeness of the information contained in PTS. The Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers shall
ensure accuracy and completeness of the PTS used for the intended design and engineering
er

requirement and shall inform the Owner for any conflicting requirement with other international
nt

codes and technical standards before start of any work.

-I

PETRONAS is the sole copyright holder of PTS. No part of this document may be reproduced, stored
in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, recording
AS

or otherwise) or be disclosed by users to any company or person whomsoever, without the prior
written consent of PETRONAS.
N

The PTS shall be used exclusively for the authorised purpose. The users shall arrange for PTS to be
O

kept in safe custody and shall ensure its secrecy is maintained and provide satisfactory information
TR

to PETRONAS that this requirement is met.

ANNOUNCEMENT

Please be informed that the entire PTS inventory is currently undergoing transformation exercise
from 2013 - 2015 which includes revision to numbering system, format and content. As part of this
change, the PTS numbering system has been revised to 6-digit numbers and drawings, forms and
requisition to 7-digit numbers. All newly revised PTS will adopt this new numbering system, and
where required make reference to other PTS in its revised numbering to ensure consistency. Users
are requested to refer to PTS 00.01.01 (PTS Index) for mapping between old and revised PTS
numbers for clarity. For further inquiries, contact PTS administrator at

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This PTS provides theacceptance criteria for oxidation and recommendation in the
prevention and removal of oxidationduring welding of solid stainless steel or cladding
weldments.

1.1 SCOPE

This PTS is intended for use in design & engineering, fabrication, inspection, installation,
operations and maintenance of the facilities at exploration and production, gas processing,
refineries, chemical plants including storage and handling etc.for applicable stainless steel

y
grades:

nl
i. austenitic stainless steels AISI 316L and the super austenitic alloys type UNS

O
S31254;
ii. duplex stainless steels such as 22Cr UNS S31803;

se
iii. high nickel austenitic alloys such as Incoloy 825 and Inconel 625.

2.0 AVOIDANCE OF OXIDATION

This PTS shall be read together with the following relevant PTSs:

PTS 15.12.04 Welding of pipelines and related facilities

(amendments/supplements to ANSI/API STD 1104)

PTS 15.12.02 Welding on Pressurised Pipes (Amendments/Supplements

O
For oxidation in high temperature 400oF (204oC), “API 571- Damage Mechanisms Affecting

se
Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry” shall govern.

lU
TA approval shall be sought should contractor elect to use other standards.
na
Purging with inert gas shall be provided before and during welding.

3.0 OXIDATION REMOVAL

3.1 MECHANICAL METHOD

For removal of oxidizedlayer, thespecimen surface shall be polished using a grinder. Smooth
transition shall be made with the unpolished base material. Dedicated stainless steeltools
shall be used.

Ra, final surface roughness shall be less than 12.5 μm.

3.2 CHEMICAL METHODS

y
3.2.1 Pickling And Passivation Liquids

nl
O
Chemical for pickling and passivation is a mixture of HF/HNO3. Analysis of the solutions shall
be performed to control the acid concentrations. The acceptable minimum and maximum

se
concentrations (including contamination elements such as Fe2+, Fe3+ and other metal ions),
exposure time and temperature shall be included in the pickling procedure. Only fresh water

lU
with chloride concentration of less than 200 mg/kg, shall be applied for final rinsing. Blowers
shall be used for dryingafter final rinsing.
na
3.2.2 Pickling And Passivation Pastes
er

This method is applicable to the external side of equipment, pipelines, pipes etc. The pastes
nt

shall contain no halogens and shall be specifically produced for the removal of the oxide
layer.
-I

Sufficientvolume of fresh water shall be used for washing residual chemicals.
