VALVES FOR SWITCHING FLOW 318
MULTIPORT VALVE Used largely on hydraulic and pneumatic contro cir
cuits and sometimes used directly in process piping, these velues have rotry-
ball or plug-ype dises with one oF more ports arranged to switch flow.
DIVERTING VALVE Two typas of ‘diverting’ valve are made. Both snitch
flow from 8 fine into one of two outlets. One type is of wye pattern with e
Fringed ise at the junction wich closes one ofthe two outlets, end is used
to hendle powders and other solids. The second type handles liquid only, and
has no moving partsflow is switched by two pneumatic contra fines. I is
svalable in sizes to G:inch,
‘VALVES FOR DISCHARGING 34.9
‘These valves allow removal of fluid from within o piping system either to
atmosphere, to a ¢rein, oF to another piping system or vessel at a lower
pressure. Operation is often automatic, Palit and safty valves, steam traps,
and rupture discs ace included in this section, Pressurereleving valves aro
usually soring loaded, as those worked by lover and weight con be easly
rendered inoperative by personnel. The first three valves sre operated by
system presute, and are usually mounted diroctly onto the piping or vessel
‘0 be protected, ina vertical, upright position. Refer to the governing code
or the application of those valvgs, including the naed for an external lifting
device (hanelever, etc).

SAFETY VALVE A repid-onening {oopoing ection) fullflow vale for air
and other gees.
RELIEF VALVE Intended to relieve excess pressure in liquids, in situations
where full-flow discharge is nat required, when release of a small volume of
liquid would reply lower pressure. Mounting is show in figure 6.4.
SAFETY VALVE.
RELIEF VALVE
SAFETV-RELIEF VALVE Relieves excess pressuro of aither gas or liquid
wihich mey suddenly develop a vapor phase due to rapid and uncontrolled
heating from chemical resction in iquidiadon vases, ater to figure 64.
BALL FLOAT VALVE These automatic valves are used: (1) AS air tans
to remove water from air systems. (2) To remove air from liquid systems
‘and act as vacuum breakers or breather valves. (3) To control liquid lave!
fr tonks. They are not imended to remove condensate

BLOWOFF VALVE A varoty of globe velve conforming with boller code
requirements end especially designed for bolas blowoff service, Sometimes
suitable ako for blowdown save. Wye-pattrn and angle types often wd

FLUSH-BOTTOM TANK VALVE Usvellyaglote tyae, designed 10 mini-

RUPTURE DISC A safety device designed to bust ata certain excess presure
and ropidly discherge gas or qui from e system. Usuelly made in the form
of @ replaceable metal dished batween flanges, Dise mey aso be of graphite
ot, for lowest bursting pressures, plstc film
SAMPLING VALVE A valve, usely of needle o globe patter, paced ina
branch line for the purpose of dravving off semples of process material thru
the branch, Sampling from very high pressure lines is best done thru a double
vehed collecting vssl. A cooling arrancement may be needed for sampling
ram high-temperature ins.
