WARNING
Danger of explosion and risk of injury
Improper operation of the coupling can result in injuries and in an explosion in potentially
explosive atmospheres.
• Insert the bolts in the delivery condition. Do not use additional grease on the bolt con-
nections.
• Secure the tensioning screws (6) and the bolts (7) with liquid screw locking agent (e.g.
Loctite 243 medium strength).
• The fourth time assembly is performed, replace the lock nuts (6) with new lock nuts.
• The fourth time assembly is performed, grease the tapered bolts (1) in the region of
the tapered surface. You will find recommended lubricants in Section Lubricant
(Page 24).

Procedure
1. Clean the tapered holes of the flanges (2) and (4).
2. A tapered connection comprises the following components:
• Tapered bolts (1)
• Nut (6) / tensioning screw (6)
• Guard ring (5)
• Hexagon bolt (7)

Information
The tapered connections are usually supplied firmly bolted to each other. Detach these con-
nections.

3. The tapered bolts (1) must be greased in the region of the tapered surface during as-
sembly. If you have cleaned the tapered surface, grease it with the corresponding lubric-
ant (Page 24).
The tapered surface is greased in the delivery condition.
4. Clean the contact surfaces for the tapered bolts (1), nuts (6), tensioning screws (6),
guard rings (5) and the plate pack (3).
5. Secure the bolts (7) with liquid screw locking agent (e.g. Loctite 243 medium strength).
Apply a small quantity of screw locking agent to the thread. Screw the bolt (7) into the
tapered bolt (1) until the bolt head contacts the surface.
6. Screw the plate pack (3) to the flanges (2; 4) on alternating sides. Arrange the bolt con-
nection as follows:
• The plate pack (3) is located between the flanges (2; 4).
• The collars of the tapered bolts (1) contact the flange (2) or (4).
• The nuts (6) / tensioning screw (6) are in contact with the guard rings (5).

M4281-02en Edition 09/2022 11

Assembly
2.3 Assembling the plate pack

7. Screw the nuts (6) on or bolt the tensioning screws (6) in. The nuts are self-locking. Se-
cure the tensioning screws (6) with liquid screw locking agent (e.g. Loctite 243 medium
strength). Apply a small quantity of screw locking agent to the thread. Turn the tension-
ing screws (6) in until the bolt head makes contact.
8. Preload the nuts (6) / tensioning screws (6). Stop the tapered bolt (1) from turning by
holding the hexagon bolt (7). Brace the anti-rotation device (counter holder) on the
flange to which the plate pack is screwed.
9. In the 1st pass, tighten the nuts (6) / tensioning screws (6) one after the other with half
the tightening torque. The tightening torques are listed in Section Tightening torques and
widths A/F (Page 23).
10.In the 2nd pass, tighten the nuts (6) / tensioning screws (6) one after the other with the
full tightening torque. The tightening torques are listed in Section Tightening torques and
widths A/F (Page 23).
11.Tighten the bolts (7) with the specified tightening torque TA stated in Section Tightening
torques and widths A/F (Page 23).

2.3.1 Structure of a bolting point with axial play limiting 2.3 Assembling the plate pack

For mounting the plate packs with axial backlash limitation, the same procedure applies as
was described in Section Assembling the plate pack (Page 11). Observe the following:
Model ARN-8, sizes 219-8 to 354-8
• For each plate pack, axial backlash limitation comprises four special nuts (8) and four
spacer rings (9).
• The four special nuts (8) replace the four nuts (6) at the flange of the intermediate sleeve
(4).
• Mount the spacer rings (9) on the side of the plate pack (3) which is in contact with the
flange of the intermediate sleeve (4). Position the plate pack (3) between the flanges (2;
4).
The axial backlash limitation will only function correctly in this mounting position.

NOTICE
An incorrectly mounted axial backlash limitation will result in coupling damage in
operation.
Carefully note the position of the special nuts (8) and the spacer rings (9) to the flange of
the intermediate sleeve (4).

2.4 Aligning the coupling 2.4 Aligning the coupling

2.4.1 Purpose of alignment 2.4 Aligning the coupling

The shafts that are joined by the coupling are never on an ideal precise axis but have a cer-
tain amount of misalignment.

16 Edition 09/2022 M4281-02en

Assembly
2.4 Aligning the coupling

Misalignment in the coupling leads to restoring forces that can stress adjacent machine parts
(e.g. the bearings) to an unacceptable extent.
The misalignment values in operation result from the following:
• Misalignment due to assembly
Incorrect position due to a lack of precision when aligning
• Misalignment due to operation
Example: Load-related deformation, thermal expansion
You can minimise misalignment by aligning after assembly. A lower misalignment in the
coupling has the following advantages:
• Reduced wear
• Reduced restoring forces
• Misalignment reserves for operation of the coupling
Alignment values can be found in Section Alignment values (Page 24).

2.4.2 Aligning 2.4 Aligning the coupling

N‑ARPEX couplings with two plate packs absorb axial, radial and angular misalignment.
N‑ARPEX couplings with a plate pack only absorb axial and angular misalignment.

Procedure
At several locations along the outer diameter, measure the clearance S1 between the coup-
ling parts.
If the measured clearances lie between the value range of S1min and S1max, then the ma-
chines are adequately aligned.
You can find the values for S1min and S1max in Section Alignment values (Page 24).

Figure 2-7: Aligning the machine parts

① Measuring point

If you fit the coupling axially preloaded, increase the alignment values S1max and S1min from
table A-3 by 50% of the axial preload for the coupling. Do not exceed the maximum permiss-
ible offset of the coupling.

Assembly
2.4 Aligning the coupling

Example
• Size 411-8
• Required axial preloading of the coupling: 1.2 mm
• Resulting alignment values
– S1min: 29.0 mm + 50% x 1.2 mm = 29.6 mm
– S1max: 30.2 mm + 50% x 1.2 mm = 30.8 mm
