Module 2: ACTIVITIES/ASSESSMENT
Activity 2.1 Review Questions: Explain the following.

1. What is SQL?

SQL stands for Structured Query Language that let you access and manipulate databases. It
was a computer language used for managing and retrieving data in relational databases. It's an acronym for
Structured Query Language. In simple terms, it is a special language used to talk to and work with databases.
It helps you store, retrieve, and manage data in an organized way.

2. Why do you need to learn SQL?

SQL, short for Structured Query Language, is a computer language designed for storing,
managing, and retrieving data in relational databases. It serves as the standard language for various Relational
Database Management Systems (RDMS), including MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server. Learning SQL is
important because it allows you to effectively work with databases, which are crucial for organizing and
retrieving data in many applications, from websites to business systems.

3. What are the different applications of SQL?

Database management systems (DBMS) enable users to access, describe, define, manipulate,
embed within other languages, create, drop, and set permissions on databases, tables, views, procedures, and
functions using SQL modules, libraries, and pre-compilers. SQL is used in a wide range of applications,
including web development, data analysis, financial systems, customer relationship management, and more,
for managing and retrieving data in relational databases.

4. Differentiate the different RDBMS Databases by their use, features, advantage and disadvantage. Use
a table for your answer.
RDBMS Use Feature Advantage/Disadvantage
Database

Advantage: Speed, large

community, cost-effective
Web applications, Open source, ACID
MySQL Disadvantage: Limited support for
e-commerce compliance, scalability
some advanced features

Advantage: Strong security, support,

SQL Server Enterprise, Windows- Integration with Microsoft and administration
based products, BI capabilities
Disadvantage: Limited cross-
platform compatibility

Advantage: High performance,

Scalability, security, extensive feature set
Enterprise, mission-
Oracle advanced analytics
critical
capabilities Disadvantage: Expensive licensing,
resource-intensive

Advantage: Quick development,

Small-scale, desktop User-friendly, desktop- good for small projects
MS Access
apps based
Disadvantage: Limited scalability
and concurrent user support

5. What is the importance of data integrity? Explain.

Data integrity in a relational database is maintained through entity integrity with no duplicate
rows, domain integrity with valid data type and format, referential integrity with preventing deletion of linked
records, and user-defined integrity with enforcing custom business rules. Data integrity is crucial as it ensures
the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of data, which is essential for making informed decisions, maintaining
trust, and preventing errors or corruption in critical systems. It is like making sure your puzzle pieces fit
perfectly – it ensures that your data is accurate and reliable, preventing mistakes and chaos in your
information.
Activity 2.2 Case Study

Create your own database that can be used by a student. It could be about student grades, schedule, student
profile etc. The database should have at least (3) three tables that are connected using a foreign key
constraint. Include all constraints that are discussed such as NOT NULL in your tables. Each table should have
at least 5 records.

Title: Student Grade Management System

Description / Purpose: The "Student Grade Management System" database is a
student system designed for tracking and managing academic grades, enabling students to access
their performance records and educators to efficiently record and analyze students' grades.
