correct answers (A, B, C or D) for questions 21 and 22.

Have you ever heard of bungee jumping? To do a bungee jump, you jump from a high bridge, or some

other high place, with just a rubber rope tied around your ankles. When the rope goes as far as it can, you are

pulled back towards the bridge. Then you fall down and come up again. This goes on again and again until the

rope finally stops moving and you hang in the air, upside-down. Then you are pulled back up to the bridge. If

there is a river below the bridge, you will be allowed to reach the water slowly, where a boat picks you up.

The first bungee jump took place in Queenstown, in New Zealand, on 12 November 1988. Since then,

almost half a million people have tried it and Queenstown has become famous for it. More than 90% of the

people are on vacation there. Many of the tourist's have come just to do the bungee jump. It has become such

a popular event that you can now bungee jump in many countries around the.world.

The reason for its popularity is that it is so very exciting. It isn't very often that people get the chance

to jump off a bridge and survive! People pay US$85 for the experience. Another reason is that, it is. quite safe

if the correct rope is used and checked regularly.

However, there have been accidents (though not in New Zealand) when the rope broke. There's not much

chance of surviving the fall if this happens, andsome deaths have been reported.

17. In a bungee jump, you jump from a high place towards a river.

18. More than 90% of all the people in Queenstown have done a bungee jump.

People often ask me who I have to thank for my success as a pianist and songwriter. They expect to

hear that I was born into a musical family and I had an excellent piano teacher. However, then truth is different.

When I was little, nobody played an instrument at home. I learnt to play the piano and sing because there was

a piano in my house and I just wanted to make music.

My parents allowed me to sit at the piano and play for as long as I wanted. If they were afraid that I

would break the old piano, they never mentioned it. They didn’t suggest that I should take lessons either, the

songs just came to me when I had my hands on the piano. I suppose I had musical talent and that is all you need.

I started writing proper songs when I was a teenager. The music was mine but the words were from

other songwriters. It seemed so easy. When you start to compose, you do that, you copy other people’s best

songs. Then you start changing the melodies and the words and you develop your own style. That only

happened later, when I had grown beyond my teenage years.

For a time, I thought music would be just a hobby. My parents had developed a strong belief that I

would be able to make a living as a musician, but I had my doubts, so after school I took a job in radio

advertising. I realized my happiness was in music. I have been a musician ever since that day.

If someone asked you which country has most of the world's tallest buildings, you would probably say

the United States of America. But you are wrong. America has only two of the world's ten tallest buildings.

China and Hong Kong have six, and Malaysia has one (although it is made up of two towers). And the tallest?

Well, it's in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan.

When Taipei 101, also known as the Taipei Financial Center, opened at the end of 2004, it became the

tallest building in the world. With 101 floors and reaching 509 meters high, Taipei 101 is over 50 meters taller

than the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. To get to the top you need to.use the world's fastest lift. It

takes just 37 seconds to climb to the 89th floor. The lift's top speed is around 60 kilometers an hour.

Before the late nineteenth century, buildings were usually no higher than ten floors. Since one of the

reasons for building tall buildings is to save space, engineers have developed new ways of building, making it

possible to increase the height of buildings. Steel, which is lighter and stronger than iron, is used to build the

tall buildings you find around the world today. Narrow, lightweight metal can support much more weight than

the brick walls in older buildings.

But how far can we continue building toward the sky? Strong winds, natural dangers such as typhoons,

as well as fire and enemy attacks must all be considered in the design of the buildings. Although it's important

to save space on the ground, the safety of people living and working in these tall buildings must be the most

important consideration.

17. The United States of America has the majority of the world's ten tallest buildings.

18. Taipei 101 became the tallest building in the world upon its opening in 2004.

19. Steel is used to build tall buildings because it's lighter and stronger than iron.

20. Making sure people are safe in tall buildings is more important than just trying to save space on the ground.

21. What is the main reason for instructing tall buildings?

A. to increase the area at the bottom B. to save space

C. to add extra floors D. to develop new ways of building

22. The underlined word "increase" in the passage probably means __________.

I've been working with teenagers for five years now. Alongside teaching them English, I've had the

chance to chat with them about different things. One time, I asked them who had a bigger impact on how well

they did in school, their parents or their classmates.

Some of them believed their parents were the ones who had the most influence on their success. They

thought this because parents love their offspring unconditionally and do anything thay can to help and

support them. For example, some mentioned that their parents took care of all the household chores so that

the students could focus on studying.

However, there were also students who mentioned that their parents were really busy and didn't have

much time to spend with them. Because of this, they found it tough for their parents to assist them with their

studies. In these cases, they felt that their classmates or friends played a bigger role in their success. They

explained that because they spent more time together, they helped each other out when it came to dealing

with any problems they faced while studying. These friendships and mutual support made a significant

difference in how well they did in school.

Before Stone Age, people used to eat fruits, leaves, and anything they found from the forest. However, this

habit changed into hunting animals, preserving food items, and planting and growing vegetables, which

eventually led to farming different crops like maize, corn, and rice. People were healthy, they rarely had

diseases and never needed extra exercise because their daily work kept their bodies running.

At present, we have turned agriculture into a mass scale production, including machinery, technology, and

pesticides, all of which came in with the green revolution. With the green revolution agriculture and the

traditional farming culture turned upside down. Nowaday, farmers who are able to cope up with multinational

cooperation and their large-scale, expensive products, keep producing crops for the market. However, the

traditional, low-income farmers even today, especially in Asian countries, are in a terrible state.

Fast food is another major factor in modern food habits. Although many people find it convenient, it leads

to many health conditions. Today people are unhealthy, need medicine, and function on diets and exereise

machines.

Wearing a uniform has its benefits. Firstly, it encourages a sense of unity and equality among students.

When everyone is dressed in the same clothing, it eliminates visible differences in clothing and reduces the

impact of socioeconomic status. Additionally, uniforms can create a sense of discipline. They help students

understand the importance of dressing appropriately for certain environments, preparing them for future

situations such as job interviews or formal events.

Besides, some argue against wearing uniforms. They believe that uniforms limit individuality and self-

confidence. Students may feel restricted in their ability to show their personality. Without the freedom to

choose their own clothes, they may struggle to develop their own identity.

In conclusion, the debate over wearing uniforms is a complex one. While uniforms can promote a sense of

unity and discipline, they may also limit individuality and personality. Ultimately, the decision should consider

the specific context and values of the educational institution. It is important to strike a balance between

promoting a sense of community and allowing students to express themselves.

Many children have music classes when they attend school. And it is thought that music can help them learn

other subjects better. Research has shown that it can improve children’s performances in certain subjects.

Some studies have shown that music training can help you understand your own language better. It could also

help you with learning a second one. Moreover, young people who have studied music also seem to get higher

scores in other subjects like maths. So it could be that these school subjects are connected in some way.

Music also helps you think of new idea and believe more in yourself. If you are learning the guitar, for example,

it can be really exciting when you are able to start composing your own pieces of music. One of the biggest

Women didn’t begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959, French film A bout de soufflé

and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as “walking advertisements”.
