Activity-Visualising Solid Shapes

Euler’s Formula states that for every solid (with straight edges only), the relationship is

F + V - E =2

Points to remember:

1. A solid shape bounded by polygons is called a Polyhedron e.g. cuboid,

cube,prism, pyramid etc.

2. Prism- A solid whose 2 faces are identical polygons and the side faces are
rectangle

3. Pyramid-A 3-D solid whose base is a polygon and whose other faces are triangles
with a common vertex.

4. The number of faces, vertices and edges in the prism and pyramid are related in
following way:

PRISMS PYRAMIDS
Faces=no. of sides of the base +2 Faces=no. of sides of the base + 1
Vertices= no. of sides of the base X 2 Vertices= no. of sides of the base + 1
Edges = no. of sides of the base X 3 Edges = no. of sides of the base X 2
The no. of faces and vertices in a pyramid are equal.

A. Based on the above points fill the following table

Solid No. of Faces No. of No. of

Vertices edges
Cube 6 8 12
Cuboid 6 8 12
Square Pyramid 5 5 8
Triangular Prism 5 6 9
Pentagonal Pyramid 6 6 10
Tetrahedron 4 4 6
Hexagonal Pyramid 7 7 12

B. Using Euler’s formula find the unknown

Faces 8 5 20
Vertices 6 6 12
Edges 12 9 34
C. Complete a magic square with numbers 5 to 13 such that sum of
the numbers in each row, column and both diagonal is equal to 27.

8 1 6
3
7 9 1

1 5 1
2 0

D. Fill in the even numbers 2,4,6,8,10 and 12(without repetition) so

that each side of the triangle adds up to 18

12 10

4 6
