in the books pride and prejudice and romeo and juliet both works critique an oppressive

society, it both the works this is critiqued threw an individuals vs society conflict. in romeo
and juliet this conflict is shown by how romeo is forbidden to be in love with juliet. whilst in
pride and prejudice this is shown threw elizabeths rebbelions to societies ideals. this essay
will compare and contrast the methods utilized to citisize the limiting nature of the society.

in both the books the critique to society being oppressive and limiting is present in the
narration, in pride and prejudice the author makes use of irony to mock the societal thinking
of the time, the book opened with “ it is universally acknowledged that a single man in
possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” this statement is ironic and mocks
society as in those times the truth was considered the opposite, and it was infact women
who wanted husbands, not men who wanted wifes. the use of irony in this novels is a
method applied by the author to mock societies oppressing status, furthermore another
instance in the novel where irony is used to mock societal norms and expretations is when
elizabeth refuses to marry darcy, at the time it was almost considered mandatory that a
woman would accept to marry a man when proposed to, however jane austen chooses to
make the protagonist go against the societal norms of the time in order to critique its
rigidness. in romeo and juliet similarly to pride and prejudice irony is also present, this is
expressed by the narration. the book genre is a tragedy and has an exteme end as it ends
with both the lovers killing themselfs, in the book the limiting effect the society has on the two
lovers is hyperbolized showing and critiquing what extreme societal pressures can lead to.

the oppression and critique of society is also present in the narration of both books ,
this theme in romeo and juliet is presented threw the constant reminder that the fates of the
two lovers are in the hands of society and not in their own, this message is enphasized by
the little say these two characters have in the play compared to how the plot seems to be
brought forward by the two families, and external characters rather than the main ones.
furthermore is message is also made stronger by the use of opposites especially in the
prolugue where words relating to love and hate are often placed close to each other evoking
the looming sense of inescapable destiny. in pride and prejudice contrasting to romeo and
juliet the protagonist seems to act on her own free will despite the attitude of the family, in
the society of the time, it women had to listen to what their parents decided for them, the
decision made by jane austen to give the protagonist power over her life and power to
decide who to marry, is a way of mocking society for its ridgness and strict social rules by
giving them no power of the protagonist life expressing the message that the oppressive
society in which elizabeth lives in has no control other her life.

to conclude both the works romeo and juliet as well and pride and prejudice portray
an oppressive society in a way that critiques its effect. both pride and prejudice and romeo
and juliet make use of irony to mock society, in romeo and juliet irony serves the purpose of
mocking its ridness and control over peoples life whilst in pride and prejudice irony is a tool
to call out rigid societal ideals that should be removed from popular belief. furthermore in
both works the ridness of the society is also mocked threw the narration, in romeo and juliet
it is done threw the choice of words whilst in pride and prejudice it is done threw the power
given to the protagonist.
