What is economic growth and development?
 Economic growth may be one aspect of economic development but is not the same.
 Both are refers to the same economic conditions in a certain society.
Economic growth:-is a measure of the value of output of goods and services within a certain
period of time.
 It is used to describe the increase in the total amount of production and
wealth of a given country.
 It is related to wealth of a country.
 It is quantitativeaspect.
Economic development:-is a measure of the welfare of human beings in a certain state.
 It refers to growth in structural and technological change.
 It is both quantitative andqualitative aspect.

Characteristics of economic development
 The increased utilization of the natural resources of a state.
 The production of more and more goods and services that inters into the market for sale.
 The growth of GDP.
 Division of labour
 Significant changes in the technical and institutional arrangement by means of which output

 Based on the level of development the world is divided into two major groups. These are:-

Basic features
 They are highly industrialized.
 The majority if the national labour force is engaged in industrial activities
 Scientifically and technological advance.
 Highly urbanized as a result the larger percentage of the population lives in urban center.
 Well-developed transportation and communication
 They achieve high per capital income and high standard of living.

Basic features
 Industries are extensively light in nature.
 They are largely depended on agriculture
 Low production due to scientific and technological backwardness.
 The majority if the society lives in rural areas.
 Lack of modern modes of the transport and communication.
 Extremely low capital income and living standard
 They consists of 80% of the world population

Economic growth and development trend in Africa

 Africa is generallyregarded as a developing continent.


 The quality of both the physical and human environments of the continent is degraded due
to rapid population growth.
 The economy is underdeveloped and is largely traditional.
 The continenteconomy is high substance industrialization is not only recent but also
highlybackward.
 One way trade system in which Africa’s wealth of raw materials were exported to which
foreign assets.
