Plants are very important to life on Earth. They are the basic food of life. Most
animals eat plants. The animals that eat plants are food for the animals. Some
animals eat both plants and animals. Humans eat both plants and animals too.

Plants need light, water, air, and nutrients
to grow. The light is provided by the Sun.
The air is in the environment above the
ground and water is held by the soil. The
water comes from either rain or snow and
stays in the soil. Nutrients are found in
the soil. These nutrients are minerals
dissolved in the soil from dead and
decaying plants and animals.

The root is the first part of a plant to grow
out of a seed when it is wet and the seed
coat breaks. Roots take in water and
nutrients from the soil. Stems then grow
out of the ground and hold up the plant.
The water travels from the roots through
the stems to the leaves. The leaves form
and they use sunlight and air to combine
with the water and nutrients to make food

for the plant. Plants produce flowers as
they grow. The flowers produce new
seeds. These seeds can make more plants.
