The government controls everything in the future. Your job, your work, everything. Even your
language! So how does an ordinary person like Winston Smith survive?
When 1984 begins, Winston Smith arrives home and he has problems immediately! Why? In 1984,
there are screens, called Telescreens, in everyone’s home. Imagine a TV screen, just like you have.
But in 1984, the TV screen watches you! In the novel, the government in Winston’s country, called
Big Brother, watches all the citizens. Big Brother wants to control everyone.
But in this futuristic novel, do people have e-readers and games consoles? No, they don’t. They
have Telescreens but nothing more! And Winston Smith hates his life. He wants to have a girlfriend
and a normal life, but the government does not want that. The government also tells people to
think they have enemies and friends. But these enemies and friends don’t really exist. They do this
to control everyone. The government even tells people to use specific language to talk! How does
Winston escape?
When I started reading 1984, I felt amazed by the story. And I wanted to know about the title!
Apparently, George Orwell wrote 1984 in the year 1948. Did George Orwell think the future was
good? No, he didn’t! He imagined a terrible future for humanity. But when you read the novel, do
you feel like it’s only fiction? Well, think of social media and advertisements. Do they, in any way,
influence our lives? Then 1984 isn’t completely fiction!
So, do you want to read a great story with a deep message? Then this is the perfect book for you.
I read it last month and I loved it. Be careful! Some parts are very sad and I cried! But it’s fantastic!
