According to research published by Ofcom, most people in the UK are dependent on their digital devices
and apparently need constant access to the Internet. The research has focused on how technology has changed
our lives over the past ten years.
The smartphone became popular in the UK in 2008, and 17 percent of the population owned one by the end of
that year. 1 ___The smartphone is now a vital part of most people’s daily lives, and it is the device that people
say they would miss the most.
People now expect constant Internet access wherever they are, with 64% of adults saying that it is an essential
part of their lives. 2 ___ For example, we no longer make as many phone calls from our mobiles and instead we
are using Internet-based apps such as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
However, for many people there are also negative effects to being online. Smartphone users in the UK now
check their devices, on average, every twelve minutes, and 65 percent of adults under the age of thirty-five
look at their phone within five minutes of waking up. 3 ___ They also admitted to looking at their phone while
they are watching TV with other people.
So how much time should we spend online? 4 ___ However, we need to spend time away from our screens if
we are to have a healthy relationship with our friends and family. So next time you’re at dinner with friends,
switch off your phone. You won’t regret it.
A Ten years later, the figure reached 78 percent, with 95 percent of users aged 16–24.
B That’s not a question that can be easily answered, since a large percentage of people use the Internet in
their jobs.
C Over the past decade, access to the Internet has improved, and the way we communicate with each other
has changed as a result.
