ENRICHING EDUCATIONAL HORIZONS: ADDING KOREAN LANGUAGE IN DEPED

CURRICULUM

Many of us Filipino’s have been inclined of K-pop, k-drama and K-culture. A lot of us
try to adopt their culture and use it in our everyday living. And there are some people who would
try to learn their language. Way back in pandemic, I was so obsessed with K-pop and K-drama. I
would like to sleep late watching K-drama’s and sung a song of my favorite K-pop Idols. As
time goes by, I would really think that what if I also know how to speak Korean language or
hangul? Or what if we try to study it at school?
In June 2017, together with Korean embassy in the Philippines, department of education
(DepEd) build a memorandum of agreement of Korean language in DepEd’s Special Program in
Foreign Languages (SPFL). This provides teaching students from grade 7 to grade 12 about
Korean language (hangul) on how to read, write and speak. However, it is only applicable in
chosen schools in National Capital Region (NCR). Department of Education emphasize that
“nurturing the skill is important specially that Philippines and Korea have strong thighs. In a
statement released by the Korean Embassy, the program aims to boost the process of harnessing
Filipino students for educational and employment opportunities inside the country and abroad.
In conclusion, Department of education maintained the subject Filipino remains as one of
the core subjects in basic education. Filipino will continue as the medium of instruction for
Araling Panlipunan and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao. In some cases, aside from Korean, DepEd
also implements Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL) classes in Spanish, French,
German, Chinese, and Japanese in all public schools. All of this provides to nourish the
improvement of education in the Philippines. And to potentially benefit the students to make it a
worthwhile endeavor.
