STORAGE DEVICE
A storage device is any type of computing hardware that is used for
storing, porting or extracting data files and objects. Storage devices can
hold and store information both temporarily and permanently. They may
be internal or external to a computer, server or computing device.
A storage device may also be known as a storage medium or storage
media depending on whether it is seen as discrete in nature (for example,
“a hard drive” versus “some hard drive space.”)

Storage devices are one of the core components of any computing

device. They store virtually all of the data and applications on a
computer, except for hardware firmware which is generally managed
through separate read-only memory or ROM.

Storage devices are available in different forms, depending on the type of

underlying device. For example, a standard computer has multiple
storage devices including RAM, a cache, and a hard disk. The same device
may also have optical disk drives and externally connected USB drive.

Each advancement of storage devices allows a computer to store more

data and save and access data faster.

What is a storage location?

When saving anything on a computer, it may ask for a storage location,

the location information is saved. By default, most information is saved
to your computer hard drive. To move the
information to another computer, save it to a removable storage device,
such as a USB flash drive

 Types of Computer Storage

The computer storage unit is divided into three parts. Given below are
details about the three types of computer storage:

 Primary Storage: This is the direct memory which is accessible to the

Central Processing Unit (CPU).
o This is also known as the main memory and is volatile

o This is temporary. As soon as the device turns off or is

rebooted, the memory is erased

o It is smaller in size
o Primary storage comprises only of Internal memory
o Examples of primary storage include RAM, cache memory, etc.

 Secondary Storage: This type of storage does not have direct

accessibility to the Central Processing Unit.
o The input and output channels are used to connect such

storage devices to the computer, as they are mainly external

o It is non-volatile and larger storage capacity in comparison to

primary storage
o This type of storage is permanent until removed by an external

factor
o It comprises of both internal and external memory

o Examples of secondary storage are USB drives, floppy disks, etc.

They can be either internal or external to the computer. These types of
devices include the hard disk, the optical disk drive and USB storage
device.
For example, when punch cards were first used in early computers, the
magnetic media used for floppy disks was unavailable. After floppy
diskettes were released, they were replaced by CD-ROM (compact disc
read-only memory) drives, which were replaced by DVD (digital versatile
disc) drives, which were replaced by flash drives.

o Each advancement of storage devices allows a computer to

store more data and save and access data faster

Tertiary Memory: This type of storage is generally not considered to be

important and is generally not a part of personal computers.

o It involves mounting and unmounting of mass storage data

which is removable from a computer device
o This type of storage holds robotic functions
o It does not always require human intervention and can function
automatically
