DBG9000) software for user. The equipment type displayed on the interface is just an
example to show the operating steps to communicate with the equipment using
RCSTOOL_900 software. The actual protection equipment for user is
application-specific.
1.1 Function
RCSTOOL_900 software is developed for users to test and maintain the protection equipment on
site, which is kind of local HMI (Human Machine Interface) as RCS-900 serial protective
equipments. User can view real-time sampled values, read and modify settings and view all kinds
of report through the RCSTOOL_900 software compatible with MW (Microsoft Windows) 95,
WM98, WM 2000, WM ME and WM XP operation systems on a computer.
Besides this kind of local communication, user still can realize the local human-machine
communication with the relay through the keypad and LCD on the frontpanel of the equipment, or
realize the remote human-machine communication on a PC with the SAS (Substation Automatic
System) software via a RS-485 port.
Run the software RCSTOOL_900 with the double click on the executable file RCSTOOL_900.exe.
If the connection succeeds between the equipment with computer via RS-232 port, the computer
screen will display as following figure. If user fails to connect the equipment to a local computer,
please modify the communication parameters of equipment and RCSTOOL_900 software
respectively to make them matched.
Chapter 2 Preparation
On the frontpanel of this serial equipments, there are a 9-pin RS-232 connector for communication
with PC and a 15-pin connector for analog quantity inputs by HELP-90A during commissioning,
which consist of RCS-900 serial line protections and auxiliary protections and RCS-917 reactor
protection.
On the frontpanel of these serial equipments, there is a 9-pin RS-232 connector for
communication with PC during commissioning, which consists of RCS-978 transformer protection
and RCS-915 busbar protection.
User needs to make a communication cable to connect the equipment with a computer through
the RS-232 port on the front panel. One end of the cable is DB9 female serial connector, and the
other end of the cable is DB9 male serial connector. Each serial connector generally has two
screws measuring 0.3mm allow the serial connection to be securely connected to the equipment.
Please refer to Figure 2.1-1 and Figure 2.1-2 for correct connections of three kinds of equipments
mentioned above respectively.

Set the setting [Debug_Baud] in the menu “COMM SETTINGS” through keypad and LCD on the
frontpanel.
The baud rate of transformer protection equipments for debugging is fixed at 15200bps in
program.

Click the icon of tool bar “Config” , dialog box of parameter configuration for communication is
displayed, shown as Figure 13-4. Only the parameter “COM port”shall be configured as same as
the port of computer which is actually connected with the equipment, all other parameters shall be
configured as same as displayed in Figure 11-4.

There are eight menus in the menu bar: “Interface”, “View”, “Download”, “Operation”,
“Configuration”, “Print”, “Status Reset”and “Help”. Click buttons of each menu, and items will be
displayed in drop-down list. The gray items are not accessible in the RCSTOOL_900 software of
this version
1) Interface
2) View
-Online Data:View real-time data. The menu has the following drop-down list.
-Report: Display equipment report and this menu will vary with report type equipment
supported.
-Real-time Curve Graph:Display real-time curve graph which is special for excitation device.
3) Download
4) Operation
5) Configuration
-Front:Select preferred font, style and size of character displayed on the frame of the software
SLD.
-Front Color:Select preferred color of font displayed on the frame of the software SLD
-Background: Select preferred color for background color displayed of the frame of the
software SLD
-Other Settings:Set parameters of oscillograph, exe file of oscillograph and waveform display
and etc.
6) Print
-XXXXXX (optional menus) : Print settings of specified settings. These menus are
generated according to equipment.
-Report:Drop-down list of this menu item will generate according report type supported by

After connecting with equipment successfully, click the icon of tool bar “Setting”, the following
figure will be displayed.
User can view and modify the setting values. Besides, many other functions such as save setting
values, printing and etc. are also provided for user by clicking the icons on the bottom of the
dialog.
(2) “Default”:Reset all setting groups to default settings. There are three other options in the
drop-down menu.
“Restore this menu settings”:Only reset current setting group to default settings
“Restore all to max values”: Restore all settings (including system settings, equipment
settings and protection settings, etc.) in the current group to the mimum values in their
setting ranges respectively.
“Restore all to min values”: Restore all settings (including system settings, equipment
settings and protection settings, etc.) in the current group to the maximum values in their
setting ranges respectively.
NOTE: “Restore all to max values”and “Restore all to min values”two options are only
for testing, and lease not download those settings to the relay. Otherwise, settings check
error probably occurs in the relay.
(4) “Download”: download settings to a relay. There is only one option in the drop-down menu.
NOTE: “Download all settings”option is usually used when user wants to modify setting
values of the relay. Once after the software of a relay is changed, it is strongly
recommended to use this option at the first time of downloading setting values so that
the relay can operate normally, and then modify other settings.
(6) “Save”:Save the current settings displayed on the dialog to a setting file.
After connecting with equipment successfully, click the item “Binary input”of the tree on the left
of the window, the following figure will be displayed.
User can observe real time sampled data and binary inputs status, and save them as a file.
After connecting with equipment successfully, click the icons of tool bar “Trip”“Alarm”and “BI”
and the tripping report, alarm report and binary input report will be displayed respectively. A
tripping report is taken as an example shown in below.
There are two selection items on the bottom left corner used to adjust the format for displaying
reports.
(1) “Return value”: This time is set only for tripping report. If the item is selected, the operation
report is also displayed when the corresponding protection element drops off.
The functions of five icons on the bottom right corner are listed below
(3) “Wave record”:Select one tripping report, and click this icon to read the waveform from
the relay and save as a waveform file. User can view and analyze waveform through FR
analyzing software.
(4) “Refresh”:Read the newest report data from the relay and refresh the report display on the
software.
(5) “Clear”: Delete all the report saved in the relay except the user operating report in “CTRL
REPORT”menu.
After connecting with equipment successfully, click the icon of tool bar “Reset”, all magnetic
latched output relays and signal relays will be reset.
After connecting with equipment usefully, click “Status Reset”->”Reset Target of Channel”and
statistics data of optical fiber channel is cleared and restart to count. Only 4U equipment of current
differential protection with optical fiber channel has this function.
This function is designed for testing thermal overload protection of 4U equipment. Between two
tests, click menu item “Status Reset” -> “Clear Target of Heat Accum” to clear heat
accumulation before start the next time test, so as that heat accumulation of the last time test
which may not attenuate to zero before the next test will not have influence on this time test.
3.9 Print
After connecting with equipment successfully, print function of equipment can be driven through
RCSTOOL_900 software, which includes printing all descriptions, printing equipment description,
printing settings, printing present values, printing report, printing communication protocol and etc.
