Project HELPER
I-Activity Information:
a. Activity Title: Project HELPER (Higher and Enhanced Level of Proficiency in English Reading)
b. Date : October 16- November 30,2023
c. Proponents : Administration, English Language Teachers, Remedial Teachers, and
Struggling Readers/Students
II-Rationale:
The term “struggling readers” is an incredibly broad term and struggling readers struggle
for a variety of reasons. Struggling readers can be students who are not able to decode or
break up words into syllables. The reader may orally read very slowly, mispronounce many
of the words, or read in monotone without expressions. These types of readers have
problems with word recognition and fluency. However, teachers generally define it as
students who need additional support, assistance, and supplemental remediation so they
will develop a certain amount of progress in their reading ability.
Gigaquit National School of Home Industries throughout the years has already
implemented various reading programs. However, common problems such as non-readers
or students under frustration level in reading are still present. In this activity it must be our
challenge to help improve the deteriorating reading proficiency of our learners and to find
those factors and difficulties that are hindering them. It is evident that struggling readers
need more help, assistance, support, and supplemental remediation so they will reach the
desired proficiency level in reading.
II- Objectives:
a. To give orientation, nature, scope and rationale of “Project HELPER” to struggling
readers; and remedial teachers for familiarity; and to stimulate students love for
reading;
b. To develop a sense of personal responsibility for one’s own progress;
c. To decrease the number of identified struggling readers;
d. To evaluate the improvement of the students’ reading proficiency.
