Pg. 1 Organizational theories

A general
summary of the Types of Organisational Theories
different school of
thoughts based Based on the article Organisational theory: then and now
on our principal The author Dr. (Haggarty, April 30, 2018), tries to draw his inspiration from four schools of
text of study theories to help us understand modern business and how we think of business and it’s
operations. These four theories include;

 Taylors school of scientific management

 Fayol school of Administrative theory
 The Webers’s bureaucracy and organisational structure
 The Simon’s Administrative behavior

Based on the article Organisational theories from classical

perspective
Contraly to the approach used by Dr. (Haggarty), (Ferdous, April 2016) established her own
facts based on three of the four theories, used by Dr. (Haggarty) which includes Taylor, Fayol
and Weber’s theory. The author expanded on the topic by articulating each keywork or the
topic sentence such as Organisation, Theory, organisation theory, classical organisation
theory, scientific management before diving into the different highlighted principles.

Differences between both school of thought and theories

(Ferdous) ensures to make her readers understand that, Taylor was more focused on Scientific
management style, Administrative management was rather the interest of Henri Fayol and
Max Weber was on the other hand interested in Bureaucracy. He also was more interested in
presenting the quantitative school of current eras.

Contrary to what (Ferdous) had to say, Dr. (Haggarty) is very careful to share his thoughts
around influence of concept of the four concepts while holding to the believe that Webar’s
Beaurocracy concept is the most influencial as he tries to bring to light the idea that, problems
today sterms from Webars model. He of course introduces the Administrative behavior
concept/theory by Herbert Simon, which came as his critic to Taylors scientific management
theory.

Similarities
What is common among these school of thoughts is they focus on task and a formalized
structure which is to ensure a rational system based on overall transparency, plasticity for
enhanced output, minimization of regidity in order to allow for organisational, restructuring,
minimization of inefficiency in hierachy of structure and control and development of positive
emotional relationship.

On the other hand, after the four theories were evaluated using scientific methods and
approach that entails experiment that focus to enhance the output and minimize resources
while serving a common good between empoyees, employers and the society at large.

How the theories help to improve the

performance of any organisation
Max Weber (1864-1920), who initiated the contemporary sociological study of bureaucracy,
freed the word from pejorative connotations, and stressed the essentiality of bureaucracy for
the rational archievement of the aim of the organisation. Weber named his creation as “ideal
type” an ideal type is what attempts selection by structure. He argued about three ideal types of
authorities namely the Traditional authority,rational-legal authority and charismatic authority.
Where he concluded each of these authorities needs to take their bosses task as theirs whiles
stressing the importance of neutral professionals with relevant technical qualifications in order
for the system to be effective.

Administrative theory was developed by Fayol around the same time as scientific management
and from a rationalist approach rather than a logical one. Part of this involved the use of
traditional top-down hierarchies within the organisation structure, however with the novel idea
that continuing education be part managerial duties. Similar to scientific management,
specialization of task played a role in administrative theory, which could be based on things
such as marketing, cusyomer service and geographical location. Today, we can see his
administrative theory being prevalent in military organisations.

Taylor’s scientific management attempts to utilize as much of the scientific method (including
experimentation) to enhance output and minimize resources, whilst serving a common good
between employer, employees and the society at large. This approach requires self-reflection
and honesty on the part of the management team plus a team of specialists for work process
optimization. This definitely alters the traditional hierarchy of a company so that it becomes
more bottom-top approach. This approach is generally found in sectors involved in industral
engineering

Herbert Simon on the other hand came up with the Administrative behavior theory as a crititism
of Taylors work on scientific management as he added it is of altmost importance to take into
consideration human psychology with emphasis on industrial optimization. As he focused on
the importance of task on an individual level (Pointing what the individual has to gain from
completing the task) within an organisation.
Pg. 4 Organizational theories

Based on the problem of Precision Industry

Taylor’s principle is generally based on industrial engineering and the activities of this industry
perfectly fits the four principles of scientific management, in which i believe, if properly applied,
can be used to solve the problem of productivity, turnover and employee satisfaction. The four
principles he proposed include;

 Replacing the old rule of thumb method through the development of a science for
every component.
 Select, train, show and improve the workman through scientific methods
 Colaboration with men wholeheartedly so as to complete the assignment scientifically.
 Equally diving the work and responsibiity concerning management and workers

This theory and principles, sense to express how division of labor, standardazation, and
productivity, emphasized an image of effectiveness that booms currently.
Pg. 5 Organizational theories

Best theory to address the problem and

why?
On the other hand, Fayol’s principles (14 in number) of management will go a long way to bost
employee’s low satisfaction, declining productivity, and turnover. Generally speaking, all the 14
principles of management proposed by Fayol is aimed at encouraging, harmony, quality
service and comfortable working environment for all.
