We added Statistic data modules to Models 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, and 3-5, with two lines each to save our
outputs to .dat files, to arrive at the four “Exercise 06-19 xxx.doe” files, where
“xxx” in the files’ names indicates from which of Models 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, and 3-5 formed the
basis. We made 50 replications of each, which was just a guess initially but worked out
acceptably in terms of getting sufficiently precise results.
For the Average WIP criterion, Compare Means function in the Output Analyzer
produced this (scales were matched since all measurement units were the same):
In all cases, there is statistically significant evidence that the parallel configuration is better
(smaller) in terms of both of these measures, and that the benefit of parallel over serial is much
greater when task times are variable rather than constant.
Here are the results of a PAN run, lumping all four cases together, and using the same two output
performance measures:
Consistent with what the Compare Means function from the Output Analyzer reported, the
parallel configuration has much to offer when task times are variable, but serial and parallel are
practically the same when task times are constant.
