Role of Materials

In the English speaking and writing skills course for Grab Drivers that we have
proposed, we employ several teaching and learning materials which mainly include
technological based learning tools and applications. The course also emphasizes the
participants’ active involvement during the lessons with the guidance of instructors as
facilitators. We used thematic approach in creating our teaching and learning materials. The
theme of our lessons is ‘tourism’. Our materials are adapted from several sources such as
Grammarly, YouTube and Slideshare.net. The learning materials involve writing and speaking
skills and are suitable for the beginners as it mainly focuses on the basic use of English in daily
conversation between Grab drivers and passengers. The contents used in the materials are
familiar with the learners.

The first lesson of this course focuses on English speaking skills for Malaysian Grab
drivers and participants are taught on this skill through role-play activity. Role-play is chosen
as the learning activity because this activity is one of the best ways to practise common
scenarios and real-life situations. At the beginning of the lesson, the participants will watch a
video explaining about role-play activity. This video is authentically created and designed by
our group with some information taken from a reliable source. We include video in the lesson
instead of doing usual explanation because videos are known to engage and immerse learners
as well as able to provide information in a fun manner that participants will appreciate and
enjoy. Furthermore, in the second activity of the lesson which requires the participants to do
role-play, participants will be given common situations that they usually face as a Grab driver.
This helps to prepare them to speak better if they were to experience the same situation again
in the future.

After each lesson, we provide Kahoot activities to the learners about Adjectives and
Prepositions. We chose Kahoot to make our learning interesting. Other than that, kahoot offers
a great engagement from the learner’s side. Learners enjoy it as it is a visualized and unique
type of quiz. Each quiz consists of 10 questions. The questions are originally created by us
focusing on tourism. We include this activity at the end of each lesson to help the learners to
summarize their learning. Moreover, these questions help to check the learners' understanding
of the specific lesson.

In conclusion, it is crucial to identify the needs and the capabilities of the target learners
when selecting the authentic materials. The materials should include learners' involvement to
make the lesson successful. For instance, the theme of the course is related with the learners’
personal life, hence they can participate actively in the activities. Materials provided should be
varied as it can be used for various purposes and are also easy to access by the learners. The
materials used are created by the author but there are a few sources that have been referred to
create the course.
