Course Description
MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) come in many different forms but none have radio spectrum licences or macro
base stations (the expensive parts of a mobile network). They will use the radio components of an existing MNO and will try
to own their own customers independently from the underlying MNO. Beyond that, there are many options in terms of
relationship with underlying operator and how much equipment that the MVNO owns.
In 2009, there were 366 active MVNOs operated by over 360 companies round the world. Around 90 companies were
planning to enter the market sector and there were 72 brands run by real mobile operators pretending to be MVNOs for

Whilst some MVNOs are very successful (Virgin and Tesco) ,MVNOs don’t always have things their own way and there
have been some well-known failures, including Disney Mobile. So as well as what works, this course also explores what can
go wrong and how to avoid some pitfalls.
