INTRODUCTION

Civic education is a subject that focusses on civil, economic, cultural and social concepts in the
world, practically in Zambia.

GOVERNANCE

In every Zambian home, different families have their own ways in which they maintain their own
houses. They are able to control, formulate rules and they are implemented by imposing
punishment to every child who goes against them. Parents in houses act as leaders who maintain
their families, the same is applied to countries

Governance is defined as a way a state, country or nation is ruled by a political government.


Different countries have different ways it is governed. We will dive in directly to explain the
different types of governance.

TYPES OF GOVERNANCE

There are different types of governance which are

a) Democratic governance
 Democratic governance is the type of governance where people are free to
choose, vote their own type of leaders and are also able to participate in
governance.
 Democratic governance comes from the word “democracy” which means the rule
for the people, by the people.
 This actually implies that, the government rule is only for the interests of the
citizens and people involved in that country.
Characteristics of democratic governance.
The following are the characteristics of democratic governance
 Free and fair elections

 Free to vote
 Freedom of expression and national assembly
 Rule of law
 Separation of powers
 Free media reporting
 Transparency and accountability
 Able to stand as a candidate for presidency.
b) Dictatorship
 Dictatorship is the type of governance where people are not free to choose their
own leaders and are not allowed to participate in governance
 It is the opposite of democratic governance

Characteristics of dictatorship

 No Free and fair elections


 No Free to vote
 Lack separation of powers
 Lack rule of law
 No Freedom of expression and national assembly
 No Free media reporting
 No Transparency and accountability
 No Able to stand as a candidate for presidency.

NOTE~ Democratic governance is also called good governance. Dictatorship is called bad
governance.

c) Monarchy
A monarchy id s type of governance at which people are ruled by either a queen or a
king
