Materials Required:
• Copied face sheet per student
• HB pencil
• Thin black pen
• Coloured pencils or coloured felt
pens
Demonstration:
Demonstrate, by drawing on the board or showing pictures, how the placement of
facial features (like the eyes) can change the mood of the face. Put eyes close together,
further apart, near the top of the head, closer to the bottom of the face and observe
how the expression of the character changes. Show examples of different kinds of eyes
or noses or mouths they could use in their characters. Encourage them to work lightly
in pencil first and then in fine black pen. Add colour at the end.
Studio Time:
Encourage students to use different facial features on each face, exploring the
expressive possibilities of the placement of features rather than using the same types
of features on each face. Monitor their speed to ensure that they are working carefully
and thoughtfully.
Extension:
Students can draw their own faces, experimenting with face shapes as well as feature
placement.
