Marking Guide
Instruction: Answer all the questions. For the problem, section A and B are dependent meanwhile section C
and D are independent to each other.

SECTION A: STATICS

Question 1: Analyze the trusses below and say whether they are statically determinate or indeterminate?
. (5 marks)

Question 2: (20 marks)

The jack shown is designed to lift small unit-body cars (for
this case, the mass is 500kg). The screw is threaded into the
collar pivoted at B, and the shaft at A. the thread has a mean
diameter of 10mm and a lead (advancement per revolution)
of 2mm. the coefficient of friction for the thread is 0.20.
Determine:
a) The helix angle of the square thread. (2 marks)
b) The force P normal to the handle at D required to
raise the mass from the position shown. (10 marks)
c) The force P normal to the handle at D required to
lower the load from the same position. (6 marks)
Hint: Neglect friction in the pivot and bearing at A.

Problem:
The elements of a stump grinder with a total mass (exclusive of the hydraulic cylinder DF and arm CE) of mass
300kg with mass center at G are shown below. The mechanism for the articulation about the vertical axis is
omitted, and the wheels at B are freely to turn and their contact with the ground is punctual. For the nominal
position shown, link CE is horizontal and the teeth of the cutting wheel are even with the ground. The
magnitude of the force F exerted by the cutter on the storm is 400N. All dimensions are in millimeters.

SECTION B: DIMENSIONING

Question 3: (Equilibrium) (10 marks)

In this section we are to calculate the unknown mechanical action of the system
a) By the help of the free body diagram that shows only E, B (wheel/ground), and A as external
contact, calculate the magnitude of the forces FB, and FE , (5 marks)
b) And the forces at B and E respectively. (5 marks)

Question 4: Dimensioning (strength of Materials) (15 marks)

The jack DF and the arm EDC are made of steel XC 40 of young modulus E = 8x10 5MPa; elastic limit
strength σe= 450MPa; and security factor s = 5.

b) Calculate the external force at E, then the internal forces of the arm EDC and draw their respective,
normal, shear force and bending moment diagrams. Furthermore deduce their maximum values on
the graph. (8 marks)
c) For the cross section shown, Dimension the arm EDC by determining the dimensions h and b, if
h=5b. Take for Mbmax = 2 345 250 N.mm (4 marks)

SECTION C: FLUID MECHANICS (25 marks)

The hydraulic jack is supplied by a pump with a discharge rate of 1000L/min taking hydraulic form the
reservoir shown. The density of this hydraulic is 445kg/m 3
Question 5:
a) Calculate the pressure that the jack will need if its piston diameter is 120mm to produce a force
FF = 3827 N. (1 mark)

b) Calculate the diameter of the pipe to supply such a discharge rate if we limit the maximum flow
velocity to 0.5m/s. (2 marks)
Question 6:
Calculate the resultant force R that the hydraulic fluid will apply on the reservoir wall AA’ and BB’,
and their respective point of application y1 and y2. The reservoir has uniform width as shown. Compare
the both results and conclude how the shape of the reservoir should look like in reality to for
convenience and dimension point of view. (5 marks)

SECTION D: MOTION (25 marks)

Question 6
The arm EDC undergoes a uniform rotary motion, with a constant angular velocity such that the
angular velocity of the arm EDC is 0.75rad/s,
a) Calculate the velocity at the point D. (5 marks)
b) Calculate the velocity at the point C of this arm. (5 marks)
c) Calculate the velocity at a point m of this arm 2/3 of CD. (5 marks)
