Passive IR Sensor

Introduction
Introduction
This document describes the installation of the Passive IR Sensor for the Kongsberg
Bridge Watch Monitoring System (BWMS). This sensor is used as a motion detector
by the BWMS. The main purpose is to detect movement in those areas of the vessel's
bridge that contain navigation equipment.
The sensor must be installed in sufficient numbers on the ceiling of the bridge to cover
all the look-out positions on the forward bridge and bridge wings (and not to cover any
other parts of the bridge). The sensor (or sensors) either replaces “Dead Man” reset
buttons on the bridge or is installed in addition to them.
Traditionally, if there has been no activity on the navigation operator stations and nobody
has pressed a “Dead Man” reset button for a preset time period (of between 3 and 12
minutes), then buzzers around the vessel will sound in a sequence specified according to
regulations and the vessel owners’ requirements.
On vessels where the “Dead Man” reset buttons have been replaced with motion
detectors, when movement on the bridge is detected, an alarm signal is sent to the
BWMS. (In other words, they send an alarm signal constantly to the BWMS as long as
there is movement on the bridge.) If this signal stops for a specified time period (of
between 3 and 12 minutes), the BWMS sounds the buzzers in the relevant cabins to alert
officers and crew that the bridge is not manned.
Installation of the sensors thus means that the ship's personnel no longer need to press
the “Dead Man” reset buttons every few minutes when they are not using the vessel's
controls.

Selecting the mounting location
This chapter explains the main considerations that determine the mounting location
for each sensor.
The area covered by the sensors you install must include all the look-out positions on the
forward bridge and bridge wings, and it must not include any other parts of the bridge.
The location, orientation and spacing of the sensors will be calculated by Kongsberg
project engineers to ensure that the required coverage is achieved. Before installing the
sensors, you must therefore refer to the project documentation and mount the units in
accordance with the calculations that have been performed for the vessel.
Note
Do not position the units near to any heating, ventilation or air-conditioning equipment
or outlets. Warm or cold air from these can interfere with the unit's passive infrared
system which operates by detecting variations in temperature.

Protection area
The protection area is defined according to the installation height of the sensor, as long
as it is not limited by walls, doors, windows or other barriers.

Passive IR Sensor
Installation procedure
1 Slide release lever to a direction that an arrow points to detach sensor unit from
base unit.
2 Mount the base on the ceiling with screws. Fix it so that the front mark (↑) is
pointing to the center of the protection area.
Note
The front mark should be pointed to the area where the alarm LED is checked
at walk test.

Installation procedure
6 Put a sensor unit into a base unit from the front mark side.
7 Push the sensor unit until the release lever will click.
8 When the sensor unit is detached, hold it and slide release lever as illustrated.

Passive IR Sensor
Test procedure
1 Turn the power ON, and wait for 1 minute until the alarm LED stops flashing.
2 Walk test in the protection area to check if an alarm is activated.
Check on both the alarm LED and control panel.
3 After correct operation has been confirmed, turn the alarm LED OFF with mode
selector on the rear of the sensor unit.
When set at OFF, the alarm LED does not light even if an alarm is activated.
