Chapter One

Introduction

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, abbreviated as CBE, is one of the most important banks
in Ethiopia. The bank was once part of the State Bank of Ethiopia, which was created in
1942. This paved the path for CBE to be established separately in 1963, before merging
with the then-existing Addis Ababa Bank in 1974. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has
around 22 million account holders who can enjoy a variety of services. Intending to digitize
money in mind, the bank already had more than 2.5 million internet banking users as of
last year. CBE is Ethiopia's first modern banking institution. With 485.7 billion in assets,
it was previously the largest African bank.

CBE is Ethiopia's first modern banking institution. It was previously one of Africa's largest
banks, with assets of 485.7 billion Birr as of June 30th, 2017. It presently has over 1500
branches around the country and plays an important part in the country's economic
prosperity and development. CBE was also the first bank in the country to offer Western
Union Money Transfer Services, and it currently works with over twenty money transfer
companies, including Atlantic International, Xpress Money, and Money Gram. CBE has
long-standing and dependable ties with internationally recognized banks throughout the
world. The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has established correspondent relationships with
well-known overseas banks such as Commerz Bank A.G., Royal Bank of Canada, City
Bank, and HSBC Bank, it also has a SWIFT bilateral arrangement with more than 700
other banks throughout the world.

Chapter Two

Overall Internship Experience

At the end of July, we went to CBE and submitted our papers to Mr. Hailu in person and
had an interview and were asked about every detail exposure we had to Computer
engineering and our subjective views on the computer system. After that, we requested to
join the maintenance Department for a 3month period and the network and Database
administration for a month to have adequate exposure to the management and maintenance
side of each system. Our internship started in November in the maintenance department.
In this department office and computer equipment come from district maintenance centers
and get fixed we mostly worked on office equipment like printers, PCs, scanners,
projectors, and TVs.

The workflow of the maintenance department is first the faulty equipment comes to the
bureau then the manager comes and selects one person to look at it. The chosen person will
attempt to fix the equipment then if it is fixed it will be sent to a supervisor who will check
and send it back to the branch it came from.

2.1 Printers: are office tools that change digital data to a hard copy. There are 4
types of printers Inkjet, LaserJet, dot-matrix, and thermal printer. And a printer
passes through 7 steps to print out a text
Step 1: Sending: Data is sent to the formatter board of the printer.
Step 2: Cleaning: cleaning the drum from residual toner particles from the
previous print.
Step 3: Conditioning: applying a charge to the drum unit and the paper as
it passes through the corona wire.
Step 4: Exposing: the photosensitive drum is exposed to a laser beam.
Step 5: Developing: toner is applied to the latent image on the drum.
Step 6: Transferring: transfer roller, and applies a positive charge onto the
paper.

Page | 11

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

Step 7: Fusing: Heat and pressure are applied to the toner by the fuser unit.
The toner generates a permanent bond as it is pressed and melted into the
paper.

Printers may have 2 types of issues when it’s electrical or mechanical. When it’s
mechanical it means it's connected with the gears that roll paper throughout the
system or any physical problems like a paper being stuck in between the drum and
other sensitive parts. When it's electrical that means it's either the formatter board
that receives the data from the PC or network or it’s the mainboard that contains
the power part and the control part. The power part contains the transformer and
different capacitors that provide the power that the components in the printer need
and the control board is the one that controls the 7 steps and interprets the data
received consisting of ICs, transistors, and switches.

While maintaining a printer first we check the power cable then we plug it in and
look on the LCD screen or the alert sound and check if any paper is stuck in the
machine if there isn’t any we unplug and will disassemble the printer then check
the power board if the required amount of power pass we will continue to the
control board and if there is any problem there too we continue to go on to the
mechanical part of the machine most printers have problems in their formatter
board or their mechanics because of their misuse and being worked on a daily bases
without a break making them clogged.

Internship Report June, 2022

Figure 4 While repairing Epson LQ-350 and HP laserjet 600 with a gear and formatter board problem

The solution for the above-mentioned printer was to open it and clean every part of the
electrical and mechanical parts with thinner. After that, the malfunctioning gear from the
Epson LQ-350 was removed and replaced with one from stock and put back together.
For the HP laserjet 600, the formatter board can’t be found therefore it was connected to
the bank network using an ethernet port and used only via the network.

2.2 Personal Computers: They are mainly Desktop and Laptop. When we
maintain these devices, we check two things if it’s a software-based or a hardware-
based issue, if it is a software issue, we will have a backup and reinstall the
software to fix the problem. If it is having a hardware malfunction, we first check
the power cable if power is going into the power unit of the pc then we open the
back panel and check to see if anything is disconnected after we unplug it for
safety. Then we check the power unit for desktop or the powerline on Laptop
check the going outlines are safe and intact then we continue to check if any
mountable devices are making the problem by dismounting them and powering it
on seeing if the previous problem has been solved if not we continue to the
motherboard components we check every MOSFET capacitor resistor and IC to

Page | 13

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

find what's causing the problem then when it’s found we will remove it if
necessary or fix by changing the faulty part.

2.3 Projectors: is an optical device that projects an image (or moving images) onto
a surface when we maintain a projector, we first check the projector bulb which is
the most expensive and sensitive part of a projector if it's safe and sound we
continue to the power board and check if power is entering and being distributed
properly after that we check the control board which contains the USB, HDMI,
VGA(if any), and the control button. But most of the time projectors have
problems with the sensitive projector bulb which is sensitive.

2.4 Television: is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting moving

images in black-and-white or in color, and two or three dimensions and sound.
When we maintain televisions we first check if power is going in then try to turn
it on if it won't turn on. we open the backboard panel after we unplug and check if
the power board works using a multimeter then the control then board the ticon
lastly we check the screen entry and leaving lines checking if power reaches
through if it doesn’t then the problem is from the connection lines or the power
board. But If it has power but won’t turn on probably it’s from the ticon therefore
we change that equipment and check if the problem is fixed.

Internship Report June, 2022

Figure 5 While repairing a Samsung smart LED tv with a Ticon problem

The solution for the above-mentioned TV was to send it back to its company for a
component change.

2.5 UPS: These are devices that help us to have uninterrupted power to our devices.
Most of the time it's used as a power source when power from the service provider
is disconnected but in addition, It receives a fluctuating 210-220 volt power and
stabilizes it to have 220v constantly making our devices safe from an inconstant
power supply and sudden power loss that cuts our progress in our work
environment. When the UPS is connected to a power source (AC) the power
passes through the inverter and then gets changed to DC power and charges the 7
batteries which later then are used to give the uninterrupted power source while
charging the batteries it also sends a constant 220 volt to the outlets found on the
back that can be used to power our devices.

Page | 15

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

Most of the time UPSs are used in server rooms because it’s a bank any type of
disconnect from the server might have a whole another level of loss in customer
data.

Figure 6:Repairing a UPS with an inverter problem

2.6 Networking (physical): The physical network consists of the cables (coaxial
cable, twisted pair, fiber optic, and telephone lines) that connect the different
hardware residing on the network, the adapter used on computers connected to the
network (hosts), and any concentrators, repeaters, routers, or bridges used in the
network. Here we first had to be informed about the network types, networking
devices, and working pieces of equipment of CBE. CBE network is based on the
B Type of network wiring standards although there is no functional difference b/n
A type and B type wiring standards CBE started first using B type thereby
everything is done using that. After that, we started by striping a cat 6 wire and

Page | 16

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

making Ethernet cables using the B type (WwO, O, GwW, B, BwW, G, BrwW,
Br) and tested them for connectivity then we got introduced to the server room of
the department. There we saw that Ethio Telecom is the ISP and it connects all the
Branches with the data center. They use fiberoptic wire that is connected to a
router of the branch and then the router is connected to the switch and from the to
a patch panel then leaves the server room in trunks that will be sent to each end-
user in that department which is connected to their PC's using a straight-through
keystone.

Figure 7:Patch panel, Tester, RJ45, A server-rac

The Above figure shows the pictures taken while we were on a job on the
Teklehaimanot branch assisting in building a network for the district that was
relocating from the 4-kilo branch.

2.7 Database Administration: CBE uses the Oracle database management

system which is a multi-model database management system produced and
marketed by Oracle Corporation. It is a database commonly used for running
online transaction processing, data warehousing, and mixed database work.
CBE uses this DB by first installing a Linux operating system called Oracle which
is an open-source Linux distribution packaged and freely distributed by Oracle,
Page | 17

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

available partially under the GNU General Public License since late 2006. It is
compiled from Red Hat Enterprise Linux source code, replacing Red Hat branding
with Oracle's loads. How we use it is simple, First, we install a virtual machine to
help us use more OS on our computer. Then install the Oracle Linux OS on the
Virtual machine. The minimum requirements should be met before continuing to
install and creating the database for a smooth and error-free work environment then
create groups that the Oracle Database needs and give them privileges so that when
we install the database it runs smoothly after that we extract the database and using
a terminal we run the installer either using GUI or using the terminal itself. After it
finishes installing, we then proceed to create the schema we are going to work on
by following these steps:
A. Create required directories.
B. Pfile (init. ora) file.
• Step1: -specify the oracle environment.
• Step2: - Start the database.
• Step3: - Create a database.
• Step4: - Verify.
C. Post Steps.
• Step1: - Post Scripts.
• Step2: - Password file (orapwd)
• Step3: - create spfile
• Now start the database from spfile.
After this, we can write SQL queries and perform activities using O-DBMS.

2.8 Network Management: Here we saw how we can configure and work on the
networking devices that we set up. Basically, we worked on a switch, routers, and
other networking equipment to combine and make them work as one. The network
architecture we’ve been working on is a client/server one. CBE uses the spine and
leaf method as its network architecture it is composed of 2 data centers and works in
a mesh network grid to perform connections between 1,700 branches every branch

Page | 18

DBU, College of Engineering, ECE, Computer Engineering Stream

Internship Report June, 2022

talks with the data center but branches can’t talk with each other, they can access the
same database but can't communicate with each other each conversation is made b/n
spine and leaf never in between leaf and leaf this makes it secured and make the flow
of data one way into the database of CBE.

First, we started by learning about the switches and routers around us. In each
branch, there is one edge router that connects to the VPN applied network coming
from Ethio-Telecom which is connected to the data center. Then that router is
connected to a core switch then that core switch is connected to the distribution
switch which as the name indicates distributes access to other access switches that
can be found on each floor. The core switch is a Layer 3 switch which means that
it can handle IP addresses as well as mac addresses making it versatile and very
recommendable for security purposes the distribution and access switches are layer
2 meaning they can only interact with mac addresses and VLANs are used for
grouping.

A VLAN (virtual local area network) is a subnetwork that can link together
groupings of devices on distinct physical local area networks (LANs). This means
that on a single physical device we can create many different local area groups and
give them names and security status with communications. Where we were working
VLANs were created with the number of floors on which different CBE
departments operate and every VLAN has a different IP address which does not
allow communication between each department unless it's intended to.

Lastly, we visited the DC DR which is composed of a Spine and Leaf network

architecture meaning the data center network structure is composed of two
switching layers:
• a spine and a leaf. The leaf layer is made up of access switches that
aggregate server traffic and connect it directly to the spine or network core.
In a full-mesh topology.
• spine switches connect all leaf switches.

In the data center, there are 3 rooms Telecom room, a server room, and a power
room. In the Telecom room. The telecom room is the place where the line that
comes from the Ethiotelecom(ISP) to the data center is met with the edge router.

The second one is the power room which contains various types of electrical
equipment mainly transformers, UPSs, ATI, and Generators that function
seamlessly whether power is available or not keeping the data center alive after all
for a data center to be unfunctional for even five min means the destruction of the
country’s economy. Lastly, there is the server room here is the lifeline of the data
that the bank uses there are routers, switches both layer 2 & layer 3, and other
devices like firewalls, IPN

Table 1:Networking equipment

1 Routers Nexus 9000 seies
2 Switches Nexus 9000 seies
3 Firewalls Firepower 4100 and 9300 Series
4 IPNs Cisco N9K-C9336PQ

2.9 Problems We Faced and Solution

One problem we faced during our internship was that the maintenance work was
done manually and it was tedious their paper trail was huge making every job
starting from scratch by checking from the power cable to the tiny finer detail of
the equipment that was sent there for assessment. We proposed a web-based app
that can ease this progress of starting from scratch and makes everything simple by

Chapter Three

Overall Benefits Gained

1.6 Practical Skills

Some believe that useful life skills should be taught at schools in addition to the
standard academic schedule. But, school is chiefly an opportunity to learn about
academic subjects. The main argument in favor of learning these skills is self-
evident: they are useful. We have diversified knowledge on how to tackle
maintenance problems to any office equipment and we have a basic understanding
of the networking side as well we got in touch with the equipment and also some
of the configurations.

1.7 Upgrading Theoretical Knowledge

The definition of knowledge can be properly determined by combining theoretical
knowledge with practical knowledge. Through the combination, one can truly start
applying knowledge properly and efficiently. And upon working in CBE we have
gained very new theoretical explanations and it helped us research more on
concepts that were new to us driving us more on upgrading ourselves on more and
more new technologies.

1.8 Interpersonal Communicating Skills

Certain skill sets are crucial for professionals to be able to exercise in their work
environment. Regardless of your industry, interpersonal skills (such as being able
to effectively communicate) are important because they

Help employees develop and foster strong working relationships with each other
and with their clients,
Contribute to increasing team and organizational productivity, and Create an
overall positive work environment. One of the best and most basic ways to learn
any skill, including various interpersonal skills, is to learn by doing and actively
practicing every day. We Exercised Self-Awareness of our environment and we
have been widening the social circle and earning the trust of our workmates for
even being more interactive and helping each other out even after we finished our
internship program.

1.9 Team Playing Skills

we know the importance of team working skills and how it increases the success of
a business. Also, how every single individual in a group can improve or gain skills
throughout the years that they work in groups. The individual should get a common
knowledge about teamwork and how it benefits the organizations that he/she is in.
we stated below the skills that are most important in a teamwork organization and
it is vital for team members to have and those we have gained throughout our
internship at Comercial Bank of Ethiopia.
• Communication
• Time management
• Problem-solving
• Listening
• Critical thinking
• Collaboration

1.10 Leadership skills

First of all, Leadership refers to the quality of leading people. Probably, it is one of
the most important aspects of life. Above all, Leadership has led to the progress of
human civilization. Without good Leadership, no organization or group can
succeed. Furthermore, not everyone has this quality. This is because effective
Leadership requires certain important characteristics like the ones listed above and

working at CBE initiated us to have good leadership skills and through time and
more experience we believe we can do more for ourselves and the job environment
we are placed in.

1.11 Work ethics-related issues

As an employee, we would find a good work ethic to be of great importance to us.
If we see our work as important, we would be motivated to carry it out, exercising
a work ethic. As a manager, one could argue a work ethic is of even greater
importance. we can be very easily influenced by how a supervisor or peer would
react to a situation. If one person has a positive attitude, that mindset is likely to
spread. We have taken a very great experience from our supervisor to respect our
jobs and stick to our positions but most of all we took punctuality as a great lesson.

1.12 Entrepreneurship skills

Entrepreneur skills include various skill sets such as leadership, business
management, time management, creative thinking, and problem-solving. we
applied these skills in the roles that were handed to us by our superiors. We each
had innovative ideas on how to solve some of our daily tasks.

Chapter Four

Conclusion
In this internship, we have experienced three work departments. First is maintenance
thaughts us more about the disassembly maintenance and reassembly of most office
equipment and we learned how to assemble a network infrastructure using the correct types
of equipment. Then, networking which we learned how we can configure the network
devices that we saw in the maintenance. Lastly, the database introduced us to the Oracle
database management system and how to work without a GUI interface just by using
terminals on Linux.

Recommendation
We recommend this internship showed that the best way to learn is to incorporate
theoretical teaching with practical training and it should be under consideration for next
interns they should be aware of the surroundings and the new ways and technologies rising
and that they should read more on the current ones to develop the entrepreneur innovative
way of thinking.

The other thing is that Commercial Bank of Ethiopia doesn’t allow interns togo into the
application development team interns would like to have a knowledge on the development
and operation of the “CBE mobile app “ and the “CBE birr apps “ it will help us get more
intouch with our theoretical knowledge more.
