Setting: Where and when does the story take place?
The story took place in a small town on the island of
Luzon in the Philippines, during the early 20th century.

Characters: who are the main people in the story?


Describe them.
Narrator (Child): The storyteller, a child living with their
family.
Father: The protagonist, a farmer with a strong,
determined personality.
Rich Man: The neighbor, wealthy but facing issues with
his health and family.
Judge: Presides over the court case, a character who plays
a key role in the resolution.
Rich Man's Children: Thin and pale, representing the
contrast between the two families.

Conflict/Problem: What is the problem that the


story begins with?
The rich man accuses the narrator's family of stealing the
spirit of his wealth and food, claiming that their prosperity
is at the expense of his family's well-being.
Complications: What happened to make the
problem worse?
As time progresses, the rich man and his family suffer
from declining health, while the narrator's family
continues to thrive. The rich man files a complaint against
the narrator's family, leading to a court case.

Middle: Climax: What happens when the story


gets to the most exciting part?
In court, the rich man's lawyer questions the narrator's
father about the alleged theft of wealth and food spirits.
The father agrees that they inhaled the aroma of the rich
man's food but offers a surprising resolution.

End: Resolution: How did the story end? How


did all the problems get resolved?
The father fills a hat with coins collected from his family,
symbolizing payment for the alleged theft. When he
shakes the hat, creating the sound of the "spirit of the
money," the rich man collapses, and the judge dismisses
the case. The story ends with laughter, emphasizing the
contrast between the joyful narrator's family and the
previously somber rich man's family.
