Archduchess Zariel of Avernus
PERHAPS BECAUSE ZARIEL WAS ONCE AN ANGEL,
some are tempted to feel pity toward her, maybe
even to believe there is some hope she might
redeem herself. This is a fool's hope. Save your
pity instead for all the countless souls Zariel
brought down with her into eternal damnation
and torment while she, as a fallen angel, sur-
vived to become a great ruler with legions of
fiendish soldiers and bound servants at her com-
mand and diabolic cultists and tiefling descen-
dants to do her bidding on the Material Plane.

Once among the most powerful angels, Zariel


was charged with observing the shifting tides of
the Blood War being fought between the de-
mons of the Abyss and devils of the Nine Hells.
An impetuous nature and love of battle, per-
haps fueled by the corrupting influence of the
Nine Hells themselves, caused her to become
increasingly frustrated. Why, she wondered,
should she be relegated to mere spectating
when the hosts of Mount Celestia could certain-
ly wipe out both sides of the battle were they to

Warlock of Bel (NPC)
Bel's warlocks share his bitterness over his
demotion from rulership over Avernus, and
they work tirelessly behind the scenes to tar-
nish Archduchess Zariel's reputation or thwart
her servants. Many of his warlocks are former
soldiers who admire the Warlord's military
expertise and understanding of logistics and
defensive tactics, and they seek to emulate him
in this regard when they enter combat.

VARIANT: NONHUMAN WARLOCKS


The NPC statistics presented on this and the
following page assume a base human. However,
you can also use the statistics to represent non-
human warlocks, adding verisimilitude by allowing
it to retain one or more of its humanoid racial traits.

Warlocks of Archduchess Zariel of Avernus seek
