Tutorial Question Set 3 for 2023/2024

1. Calculate the change in entropy when 25 kJ of energy is transferred reversibly and isothermally
as heat to a large block of iron at (a) 0 °C, and (b) 100 °C.
2. Calculate ∆𝑆 (for the system) when 2 mol of diatomic ideal gas molecule, is changed from 25°C
7
and 1.50 atm to 135°C and 7.00 atm. How do you rationalize the sign of ∆𝑆. Given: 𝐶𝑝,𝑚 = 2 𝑅
3. Calculate ∆𝑆 for 3 mol of a diatomic ideal gas which is heated and compressed from 298 K and
7
1 bar to 398 K and 5 bar. Given: 𝐶𝑝,𝑚 = 2
4. A certain engine operates in Carnot cycle absorbs 3.3 kJ at 400 C how much of work is done
how much work is done per cycle and how much heat is evolved at 100 C in each cycle?
5. Calculate the molar entropy of a constant-volume sample of argon at 250 K given that it is
154.84 J K−1 mol−1 at 298 K.
6. The enthalpy of vaporization of methanol is 35 J K−1 mol−1 at its normal boiling point of 64.1
°C. Calculate (a) the entropy of vaporization of methanol at this temperature and (b) the entropy
changes of the surroundings.
7. Consider the reaction at 400 K;

CO(g) + 2H2(g)→ CH3OH(g)

Given that the standard molar entropies, 𝑆 ° at 298 K, and molar heat capacities at constant
pressure, 𝐶𝑝 , of CO(g), H2(g) and CH3OH(g) shown in the table below. Calculate the standard
°
reaction entropy at 400 K, ∆𝑟 𝑆400 .

𝑺°𝟐𝟗𝟖 / J K−1 mol−1 𝑪𝒑 / J K−1 mol−1

CO(g) 198 29 + 2.0 × 10−3 𝑇
H2(g) 131 28 + 3.3 × 10−3 𝑇
CH3OH(g) 240 22 + 2.0 × 10−3 𝑇
8. Calculate the entropy change when one mole of ice at 263 K melts to form water at 333 K. The
heat capacity of ice is +3.8 J K–1 mol–1, that of water is +75 J K–1 mol–1, and the enthalpy of
°
fusion of ice, ∆fus 𝐻273.15 is +6.008 kJ mol–1.
9. The evolution of life requires the organization of a very large number of molecules into
biological cells. Does the formation of living organisms violate the Second Law of
thermodynamics? Justify your answer.
10. You received an unsolicited proposal from a self-declared inventor who is seeking investors
for the development of his latest idea: a device that uses heat extracted from the ground by a
heat pump to boil water into steam that is used to heat a home and to power a steam engine that
drives the heat pump. This procedure is potentially very lucrative because, after an initial
extraction of energy from the ground, no fossil fuels would be required to keep the device
running indefinitely. Would you invest in this idea? State your conclusion clearly and present
detailed arguments to support it.
