Activity 4.6 Hypothesis Testing

I. Formulate the null and alternative hypothesis of the following problems.

1. A department store is interested to know if their average profit this year decreased as compared
to 30 percent last year.
H0: The average profit of the department store this year did not decreased as compared to 30
percent last year.
H1: The average profit of the department store this year did decreased as compared to
30 percent last year.
2. Five brands of batteries are tested to show their difference based on their average battery lives.
H0: There is no difference on the average battery lives of the five brands of batteries.
H1: There is a difference on the average battery lives of the five brands of batteries.
3. To determine which is more marketable, an experiment on the average number of students
dining each day on two fast food restaurants near a university is conducted.
H0: The average number of students dining each day on the two fast food restaurants near a
university is equally marketable.
H1: The average number of students dining each day on the two fast food restaurants near a
university is more marketable.
4. Students of 5 different colleges took the same exam. You want to see if a particular college
outperforms the other by getting the mean scores of each college.
H0: The particular college equally perform with the other colleges according to the means
score of the 5 students from different colleges who took the same exam.
H1: The particular college outperform the other colleges according to the means score of the 5
students from different colleges who took the same exam.
5. A public opinion poll was conducted to determine if the preference of vehicle type is dependent
to the gender of a person.
H0: The preference of vehicle type is not dependent to the gender of a person according to the
public opinion poll that was conducted.
H1: The preference of vehicle type is dependent to the gender of a person according to the
public opinion poll that was conducted.

II. Compute for the correlation coefficient and determine the regression equation of the following
problems.

1. A teacher wishes to know if there is a relationship between the entrance exam scores of a
number of his freshmen students and their midterm grades. The data is shown below:

Entrance
90 85 88 93 80 86 94 82
Exam Score
Midterm
1.50 3.00 2.00 1.75 2.00 2.25 1.25 2.50
Grade

A. The Correlation Coeffiecient

Freshmen Entrance Midterm xy x² y²
Students Exam Score Exam (y)
(x)
A 90 93 8370 8100 8649
B 85 75 6375 7225 5625
C 88 87 7656 7744 7569
D 93 90 8370 8649 8100
E 80 87 6960 6400 7569
F 86 84 7224 7396 7056
G 94 96 9024 8836 9216
H 82 81 6642 6724 6561
Σ𝑥 = 698 Σy = 693 Σ𝑥𝑦 = 60621 Σx² = 61074 Σ𝐲² = 60345

n(Σxy)-(Σx)(Σy)
𝑟=
√[n(Σx2 )-(Σx)2] [(n(Σy2)-(Σy)2])

8(60621)-(698)(693)
𝑟=
√[8(61074)-(698)2 ] [(8(60345)-(693)2 ])

𝑟 = 0. 672
Since the correlation coefficient is close to + 1, it indicates a strong linear relationship
between the entrance exam scores of a number of his freshmen students and their midterm
grades.

B. The Regression Equation
𝑦’ = 𝑎 + 𝑏𝑥

𝑎 = (𝛴𝑦)(𝛴𝑥^2 ) − (𝛴𝑥)(𝛴𝑥𝑦)/ 𝑛 (𝛴𝑥^2) – (𝛴𝑥)^2

𝑎 = (693)(61074 ) − (698)(60621)/ 8 (61074 )– (698)^2
= 7. 799
𝑏 = 𝑛(𝛴𝑥𝑦) − (𝛴𝑥)(𝛴𝑦)/ 𝑛 (𝛴𝑥^2) – (𝛴𝑥)^2
𝑏 = 8(60621) − (698)(693)/ 8 (61074) – (698)^2
= 0. 903
y’ = 7.799 + 0.903x
2. The heights (in centimeters) and weight (in kilograms) of 10 volleyball players on a team are
as follows:

𝑟=
√[10(380618)-(1950)2 ] [(10(85255)-(921)2 ])
𝑟 = 0.944
Since the correlation coefficient is close to + 1, it indicates a strong linear relationship
between the entrance exam scores of a number of his freshmen students and their midterm
grades.
