Answer all the questions

1. (a) Define each of the following terms; (3 marks)

(i) Doping
(ii) Depletion layer
(iii) Transistor
(b) With an aid of characteristic curves, explain the forward bias of silicon and germanium diodes.
(5
marks)
(c) With the aid of a circuit diagram, explain the pi filter as used in smoothening circuits.
(8 marks)
(d) With the aid of a circuit diagram, describe the NPN common collector configuration.
(5 marks)
2. Determine the power dissipated by the element of an electric fire of resistance 20Ω when a current of
10A flows through it. If the fire is on for 6 hours determine the energy used and the cost of 1 unit of
electricity costs 13p. (4 Marks)
3. A coil of 300 turns is wound uniformly on a ring of non-magnetic material. The ring has a mean
circumference of 40 cm and a uniform cross-sectional area of 4 cm2. If the current in the coil is 5A,
