Text 1 : Means of transport.

International loading units. Today, the transport sector has safety, traffic
congestion, loading processes, and interoperability of available transport
modes. This has revealed several essential requirements with respect to this
development. Especially, the impact of transport on environment is addressed in
the new transport white paper of the European commission. One major goal is
an optimization of the performance of multimodal logistic chains; e.g. by
marking greater use of more energy- efficient modes.

Thus, the intermodal freight transport this will affect the design of future
international loading units in terms of interface to different carriers e.g.

Road chassis or railway wagons of the different transport modes.

Concepts for future loading units have to respect these requirements.

The three most dominant concept, containers; swap- bodies; semi-trailers-have

been further developed for certain purposes and markets.

We need pictures about means of transport.

Retail banks deal specifically with retail consumers, though some global
financial services companies contain both retail and commercial banking
divisions. These banks offer services to the general public and are also called
personal or general banking institutions. Retail banks provide services such as
checking and savings accounts, loan and mortgage services, financing for
automobiles, and short-term loans like overdraft protection. Many larger retail
banks also offer credit card services to their customers, and may also supply
their clients with foreign currency exchange. Larger retail banks also often cater
to high-net-worth individuals, giving them specialty services such as private
banking and wealth management. Examples of retail banks include TD Bank
and Citibank.

Commercial or corporate banks provide specialty services to their business

clients from small business owners to large, corporate entities. Along with day-
to-day business banking, these banks also provide their clients with other things
such as credit services, cash management, commercial real estate services,
employer services, and trade finance. JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America are
two popular examples of commercial banks, though both have large retail
banking divisions as well.

Investment banks focus on providing corporate clients with complex services
and financial transactions such as underwriting and assisting with merger and
acquisition (M&A) activity. As such, they are known primarily as financial
intermediaries in most of these transactions. Clients commonly range from large
corporations, other financial institutions, pension funds, governments, and hedge
funds. Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs are examples of U.S. investment
banks.

Business letter writing – part 1

BUSINESS LETTER LAY- OUT (PRESENTATION)

Brainstorming

1. What is a business letter?

2. What differences do you think there are between a business letter and a
personal letter?
2
1

I. What is a business letter?

Read the following description carefully to identify the features of a
business letter.

A. What is a business letter?

When you are complaining about a company’s service delivery, disputing an

invoice, answering / accepting a company’s discount, giving information or
applying for a job etc.; the letter you write is called a business letter.

B. How to write a business letter?

Writing a business letter requires some important steps. This letter is a formal one.
So it has a special format and follows conventions.

1. The format

« Accountancy 3rd year » 2023 -2024

18
The formal letter has got three main parts: the letterhead, the body of the letter and the
conclusion
a- The letterhead
This is the top part of the letter. It made of :
 The address of the person who is writing the letter, the addresser or the writer’s
address. We put it at the top or the top right-hand corner of the paper.
 The date is on the right of the letter. Various forms of the date are possible
 The address of the person you are writing to, the receiver or addressee
 The opening salutation for greeting your address before starting the body of the
letter. For that, you use the name of the reader if you know it, without the initials.
If you do not know the reader’s name, you will write Dear Sirs when it is a
company, Dear Sir (a man) Madam (woman). If you have no idea about the sex,
you write Dear Sir or Madam.
b- The body of the letter
This part is composed of paragraphs, mentioning the objective of the letter and the
detailed ideas related to the letter’s objective. The objective must clearly be stated in
the first lines or the first paragraph. Most of time, it is introduced by I’m writing to
you. The other ideas follow in the other paragraph(s).
c- The conclusion
It is the last part of the letter. It is made of:
 Different closing formulae such as I’m looking for hearing you, with respectful
regard’ and yours sincerely / yours faithfully
 The signature
 And the writer’s name or / and his position
 The conclusion can also clearly state the writer’s expectations
2. Conventions
No matter how, some letters can appear differently, common norms are considered as
conventions. Here are some of them.
a- Block style
It is the way a letter is written. This is a modern style. In this, paragraph start at the left-
hand margin
b- Punctuation
In modern business letter, punctuation is not in the headings and endings of the letter.
Normal punctuation is used in the body of the letter.
