Maxeff Electric Motor Innovative Technology: White Paper

INTRODUCTION

Induction Electric Motors (IEM) are a very popular and indispensable part of the modern industrial
and domestic worlds, but they are also responsible for several detrimental effects. IEMs cause energy
waste and other flaws which include excessive inrush amps, high reactive power at light loads and at
low speeds, questionable efficiency in the field, poor flexibility under load variations, and high pollution
of the power grid with excessive VAR production. These can lead to overproducing KVA, buying
additional components like power factor correction capacitors, electronic soft starters, and variable
frequency drives (VFDs), and avoiding shut-down to prevent power surges in start-up. Even soft
starters that reduce amp usage do not offer unlimited starts and stops, leaving users obligated to allow
the IEM to continue to run at idle even when not in use.

These issues are real and present, and demand a real and immediate solution.

BACKGROUND

IEMs are the backbone of many modern industries. EPA research shows that IEMs alone consume
65% of energy produced in both the United States and in all modern industrialized countries. 30%
of that power consumption could be eliminated if IEMs were more efficient regarding energy
consumption.

Many IEMs currently in use are older models, even though newer models offer 95% efficiency or more,
these efficiency ratings are tested in laboratory conditions. In real-world conditions, these IEMs rarely
approach their stated performance. Due to the way work load varies in real-life usage, several factors
can affect performance including the voltage and frequency, the ambient temperature, run times, and
operating conditions.

The problem has become such a part of modern industry that many add-ons and components have
become standard, including VFDs, electronic soft starters, programmable automatic power factor
correctors and capacitor banks. Even the power producers install compensating capacitor banks on
their power line to bring the produced power (KVA) in sync with actual used and purchased power
(KW/H).

These components can help mitigate factors, but they come with problems of their own, including:

- VFDs cause harmonics on grids and power lines, and used incorrectly, can actually
increase power consumption
- Electronic soft starters may reduce inrush amps, but they limit the amount of stops
and starts possible in certain time frames
- Automatic power factor correction units can be unreliable, breaking down excessively
and needing costly repairs
- Capacitors on power lines have short life spans, and when they are misfunctioning
and overlooked, they can cause serious issues
- External components require a separate purchase, as well as installation and
ongoing maintenance
2
Currently, the most effective of these is the VFD when properly installed. For example, when IEM
speed can be reduced during a specific production phase, power consumption can be regulated to
save energy. However, many production applications forbid this, whether through vibrations caused
to the apparatus or from reduced speed affecting efficiency.

IEMs have several inherent flaws that need solutions, as electrical power is becoming increasingly
expensive. There are also cases, such as small islands with limited resources, or mobile applications
such as ships or vehicles where the available power is strictly limited to a generator size.

A REAL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM

The Maxeff Electric Motor Generator (EMG) takes into account the current shortcomings of IEMs and
eliminates the undesirable effects, removing the need for costly additional components. Additionally,
the Maxeff EMG, when installed in common circuits with standard IEMs, will correct the standard
IEMs undesirable effects on the same power network and/or grid at zero cost to its owner.

The Maxeff EMG is protected under two (2) US patents as well as patented in various other countries.
Although the Maxeff EMG does the exact same work has any IEM, the Maxeff EMG is so much more.

The Maxeff EMG features an induction motor circuit just like any other electric motor. The Maxeff
EMG also includes a new induction built-in generator circuit. The two circuits share the same
magnetic field, rotor and stator. This allows the Maxeff EMG to produce substantially greater
shaft power than like-rated IEMs. Unlike other induction motors, the Maxeff EMG has no reactive
component and therefore does not pollute the grid. It also requires substantially fewer amps to do the
same work.

Better yet, the Maxeff EMG will correct any grid power factor for free as a result. Its integrated
generator circuit will constantly use the motor’s available magnetic material to produce negative
VAR (Volts Amp Reactive). This production is inversely proportional to the actual motor shaft load;
heavier shaft loads allow smaller production, and lighter shaft loads yield bigger production. This
co- generated VA (Volts/Amps) always leads the grid power in phase angle. The Maxeff induction
generator circuit constantly produces a current that leads the line voltage like an alternative power
source. Maxeff motors eliminate virtually all wasted energy which accompanies operation of
standard IEMs.

When conceptualizing the Maxeff EMG, we further addressed the problem by creating the perfect
soft start system. The Maxeff EMG has introduced a unique built-in electrical and mechanical soft
start system without the use of external or additional electronic components. This is accomplished
through electromechanical contactors and a sequence of internal automated connections. The
system allows the Maxeff EMG to receive the grid power at only 1/3 of its nominal HP, rolling
automatically to 2/3, and then to full HP. This unique feature simply reduces the inrush current as low
as only 1.5 times the motor’s nominal full load current, versus 7 times for standard IEMs. This allows
the Maxeff EMG to ramp up in speed smoothly and efficiently. It is this novel soft start system that
allows the Maxeff EMG to be started from generators half the size of those needed to start
standard IEMs.

3
For example, where a standard IEM would require a 200 KVA generator to start, a comparable Maxeff
EMG will start on a 100 KVA generator. This helps cut down on squeaky belts, prematurely destroyed
couplings and pump seals, and it is no longer necessary to leave IEMs running because of hourly start
limits. All Maxeff motors can start, stop and restart as many times as needed in an unlimited fashion
without any risk of motor overheating, removing the need for idle running.

IN THE REAL WORLD IT MEANS THIS:

Undesirable effects from standard (IEM):

1- KW/h: Active power consumption in excess

2- KVA: Excessive Apparent power consumption
3- KW & KVA Demands: Excessive power demands
4- Peak Demands: Excessive motor inrush current
5- KVAR: Poor power factor, excessive reactive power
6- Poor ability to restart multiple times: limited amount of restarts, or excessive energy
consumption on start-up

Maxeff (EMG) solutions:

1- KW/h: Less active power by 6% to 12% and higher EFF (IE4/Super Premium EFF)
2- KVA: Less apparent power (fewer amps) by 15% to 80%, depending on the load levels
3- KW & KVA Demands: Less demand by 15% to 80%, depending on the load levels
4- Peak Demands: 3-4 times less peaks and inrush current with Maxeff soft start
5- KVAR: Maxeff features PF 0.999 at any load, eliminating the reactive power
6- Poor ability to restart multiple times: Maxeff allows infinite number of restarts per hour
