WHAT IS HIP HOP DANCE?
-a vibrant form of dance that combines a variety of freestyle
movements to create a cultural piece of art
 "HIP" = PRESENT
 "HOP" = ACTION
 “HIP-HOP” = PRESENT ACTION
HOW DID HIP HOP START?
 The youth were surrounded by drugs, crime, poverty, gang
violence, and overall struggle.
 Desperate for a way to escape their everyday struggles, they
invented their own art forms.
 Instead of substances and violence, their energy was
redirected to values like originality, creativity, identity,
respect, and community.
DJ Kool Herc
- AKA the “Father of Hip Hop”
- used to start block parties in the West Bronx (AKA the
“birthplace of Hip Hop ").
THE EVOLUTION OF HIP HOP IN THE PHILIPPINES
 Jungee Marcelo
- it all began with him in the early 90' s who, after learning Hip
Hop in the actual streets of L.A., started underground dance
sessions in a hole in the wall club in Katipunan.
- coined the term "Street dance " as Hip Hop pertained more to
the culture rather than the dance
 Jerome Dimalanta
- student of Jungee Marcelo who was taking up Human Kinetics
in U.P. Diliman, all the fundamentals of streetdance.
- pushed for Streetdance as P.E. subject in UP Diliman --
eventually a Streetdance team was formed and it became the
first university with a Streetdance team.
HIP-HOP DANCE STYLE
 "TuKrumpShuCking”
1. Tutting
- is a style of dance that involves making shapes and angles
(usually 90-degree angles) with the body, limbs, hands,
fingers, etc.
- is thought to have been inspired initially from Egyptian
hieroglyphs and depictions of King Tut the pharaoh.
2. Krumping
- is a street dance characterized by energy, sharp
movements, expressive character, and aggressive
presentation
- despite all of its sharpness and speed, Krump is not a
dance of hatred as many people sometimes think
- is a peaceful dance that has a deep philosophy and
complex history of origin.
3. Shuffling
- a dance style originating in the 1980' s characterized by
fast heel and toe twisting and stepping
4. Waacking
- a focus on arm movements, creating shapes and poses
above and around the head in a fast-moving style.
Waacking is often danced to disco music.
