PONDICHERRY RENAMED AS
PUDUCHERRY

• Pondicherry since 2006 officially Puducherry, is a


union Territory of India. It is a former French
colony, consisting of non-contigous enclaves, or
districts, and named for the largest, Pondicherry.
In September 2006, the territory changed its
official name from Pondicherry , which means
“New village”.
• The Union Territory of Puducherry comprises of
the erstwhile French colonies viz. Puducherry,
Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. The Puducherry and
Karaikal regions are surrounded by the State of
Tamilnadu, whereas Mahe is surrounded by the
State of Kerala and Yanam by the state of Andra
Pradesh.

Puducherry…. The mystical place that attracts


thousands of tourists every year from all over the
world was discovered by Romans in 200 B.C.The
Portuguese established a factory in the 16 th
century. But the ruler of Gingee (The Vijayanagra
Empire) forced them out in the same century.

The Dutch who found this place attractive


established their presence in the 17th century.
Then came the French who really defined this
place in 1654. Since then puducherry was under
French Rule until 1954. On 1/11/1954 puducherry
merged with the Indian government. Options
given to choose French/Indian nationality.
puducherry has about 50,000 French nationals of
indian origin.

• Puducherry people, culture,


festivals reflect the social structure of
the Union territory. The culture of
Puducherry has imbibed various fairs
and festivals. Puducherry was the
erstwhile colony of France, so the
influence of French culture is evident
on the architecture, cuisine and
lifestyle of the people of Puducherry.
The influence of the neighboring
states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu,
and Kerala are also quite evident on
their culture. The people of
Puducherry are engaged in different
types of handicrafts like leather,
woodcraft, pottery, metal craft etc.
PEOPLE OF
PUDUCHERRY

• The Union Territory of Puducherry has a richly


cosmopolitan culture. Puducherry people speak
French and English, along with Tamil, Telugu and
Malayalam. Some of the schools in Puducherry use
French as the medium of communication. An
interesting fact about the people of Puducherry is
that half the population in the region hold dual
citizenship of both French and Indian. Puducherry
is one of the major educational centers of India and
has some renowned institutions like Aarupadai
Veedu Medical College, Mahatma Gandhi Medical
College and Research Institute, Vinayak Mission's
Medical College, Jawaharlal Institute of
Postgraduate Medical Education and Research,
Bharathiar College of Engineering and Technology,
Sri Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Engineering ans
Technology, Dr. Ambedkar Government Law

• Music & Dance in Puducherry


form a very important part of the
cultural life of the people here.
Various dance festivals are celebrated
by the people of this union territory of
India. Cultural programs are organized
during the other festivals as well. In
the dance festivals of Puducherry one
will get to watch performances of
some of the traditional forms like
Yakshgana, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Chau,
Mohininattam, etc. on the occasion of
Shivaratri the Chidambaram Natyanjali
Festival is celebrated here every year.
The festival was first initiated by Kapila
Vatsayan and Nagaswamy in the year
of 1981.
ARCHITECTURE
OF PUDUCHERRY

• Puducherry Architecture is
one of the most interesting
subjects to be noticed and
studied about this union
territory of India. The
architecture here is highly
influenced by the culture of the
place. An interesting fact about
Puducherry is that the city is
divided into two quarters. While
one is the French sectors the
other is the Tamil section. The
cityscapes of the two different
sectors strongly reflect the
lifestyle and practices of the
people living in this place.
CUISINE
OF PUDUCHERRY

• The cuisine of the Indian union


territory of Pondicherry consists of
a mixture
of Tamil and French influence,
given the history of the area as a
former French outpost in India
until the late 20th Century.
Common foods
include baguettes and croissants wi
th coffee for
breakfast, ratatouille, coq au
vin, bouillabaisse, which all show
their French heritage or South
Indian meals such as masala
dosa, sambar or idli.

• The Asian koel is a bird of


light woodland and cultivation.
They prefer staying in a dense
thick forest with thick trees
and bamboos, light woodland,
and cultivation areas.

• The Indian palm squirrel


(Funambulus palmarum),
sometimes known as the
three-striped palm squirrel, is
a naturally occurring rodent
species in Sri Lanka and India
that belongs to the Sciuridae
family.

• Pondicherry has a broad


diversity of wildlife,
comprising birds, moose,
bears, beavers, snowshoe
hares, turtles, butterflies, and
dragonflies. Sanctuary indexes
have been assembled for
Mammals, Reptiles and
Amphibians, Fish, and
Odonata which include
Dragonflies and Damselflies,
Butterflies, and Birds.
