Overview

It is important that the Media and Cassette data held by XMF is correct to ensure correct processing of
both the software and the output or proofing device.

The Media window is used for the following functions:

Create media manually.

Modify media manually.
Delete media.
Download media to a device
Remove media from a device.
Create New Media

Modify the fields as required (see below) then click the OK button to confirm the new entry.

Name

A name to identify the media.

Media Type

The specific Media Type.

Either create a new Media Type by typing in the name, or select an existing Media type from

the drop down menu.

Some media types are supplied with the software.

The choice of media type affects the remaining fields.

Type

The general media type; film, plate or paper. The choice affects the options available for the
Media Class.

Format

The format in which the media is supplied, e.g. roll or sheet. The option ‘Roll as sheet’ is used
for some proofing devices, such as the PictroProof, that cut the paper to defined sheet sizes.
The format determines which media dimensions can be selected below.

Media Class

The options available in the drop down menu depend on the selected Type.

Film gives a choice of High Contrast Film or Low Contrast Film, which helps the output
device to determine the degree of exposure required.
Positive Plate has Plate as the only option.
Negative Plate also has Plate as the only option.
Paper gives a choice of Photosensitive Paper or Proofer Paper.

Interleaf Removal

This option is enabled for plates. Tick the box if there is interleaf paper between the plates.

Width

For a roll of film or paper - the width of the roll.

For a sheet of film or paper - the horizontal dimension, as the sheet is fed into the device.

For a plate - the short dimension of the plate.

XMF uses this information when determining where the output device starts exposing film or
plate or, with a proofing device, where the device starts printing on the paper.

Certain output devices, such as the Luxel Violet series, use the information for media
handling.

Height

For a sheet of film or paper - the vertical dimension as the sheet is fed into the device.

For a plate - the long dimension of the plate.

XMF uses this information when determining where the output device starts exposing film or
plate or, with a proofing device, where the device starts printing on the paper.

Certain output devices, such as the Luxel Violet series, use the information for media
handling.

Thickness

The physical thickness of the media. Some output devices need this information as the
thickness of the media affects the focus setting.

Length

Calibration Manager http://192.168.0.245/help/English/Content/Help_Topics/util/Utilities/c...

For a roll of film or paper - the physical length of the roll.

For a sheet of film or paper - the number of sheets in one cassette.

For a plate - the number of plates in one cassette.

Calibration
Overview
The Calibration window is used to calibrate output devices. There are three different types of calibration that
can be performed:

Linearisation
This applies a compensation curve to correct for any inherent imaging dot gain for the engine and media
combination.

Characterisation

15 of 34 10.05.2023 09:18
Calibration Manager http://192.168.0.245/help/English/Content/Help_Topics/util/Utilities/c...

This is a compensation curve to correct for press dot gain (usually done at the scanner stage for images and in
DTP applications for tints and electronic artwork). Sheetfed offset work normally requires a different set of
characterisation curves to a newspaper. This is not necessary if Colour Management is being used.
