Kia ora and welcome
The holiday season has arrived. Board members, Janet
and Natasha wish you all a wonderful and safe
summer holiday with whānau and friends.

2024 Board Meeting Dates
• Sunday 25th and Monday 26th February in Auckland
• Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May
• Monday 20th May - Board Planning Day
• Friday 16th and Saturday 17th August
• Sunday 24th and Monday 25th November
The Board will send out an email in advance of each
meeting inviting Psychotherapists to “Meet the Board”.
For those who joined the “Meet the Board” session at
the November meeting, thank you for your
contributions. It was great to hear from you.
Strategic plan update
The Board revised its 2022-2027 Strategic Plan in June
2023. The following information indicates work in

progress and/or work planned for completion during
2023-2024 as part of the Annual Plan.
The Accreditation Pilot
In July 2023, the pilot of the accreditation application
process got underway. The accreditation standards
form the basis for the accreditation of training
programmes/pathways. To date, two training providers
have submitted their documentation to be assessed for
accreditation. The accreditation pilot will come to an
end in March 2024 and thereafter the pilot programme
will be reviewed.
Following a review of the pilot programme, all other
training providers will be invited to apply for
accreditation. The accreditation of training
programmes/pathways signals the end of
‘grandparenting’.
At the August 2023 Board meeting, the Board
confirmed that the ability to secure registration under
the Interim Scope of Practice will cease once a training
programme or pathway is accredited. However, any
student already enrolled can still seek registration in
this Scope of Practice with its duration, save for in
exceptional circumstances as determined by the
Board, still being no longer than five consecutive
years. The ability to secure registration under the
Interim Scope of Practice for future training
programme/pathways applicants will cease as of 31
December 2024.
The Board’s Supervision policy
In August 2023 the Board published the revised
Supervision policy. In keeping with ‘right touch
regulation’, the revised policy now enables more
flexibility regarding a Psychotherapist’s choice of
supervisor.
Review of the Core Clinical Competencies of the
Psychotherapist Scope of Practice with Child and
Adolescent Psychotherapist Specialism
Following the mid-year consultation process for the
review of the Core Clinical Competencies of the
Psychotherapist Scope of Practice with Child and
Adolescent Psychotherapist Specialism, a Child and
Adolescent Core Clinical Competencies Committee (the
CACCCC) was formed following an Expressions of
Interest process.
The CACCCC met on two occasions to review the Child
and Adolescent Core Clinical Competencies. The Board
considered the CACCCC’s recommendations at the
November 2023 Board meeting. This included the
recommendation to update the Child and Adolescent
Core Clinical Competencies. Whereas the work of the
CACCCC is now complete, the Board is in the process
of planning for the next stage. Once this work is
completed, the revised Child and Adolescent Core
Clinical Competencies will go out for consultation.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi
In keeping with the Board’s 2022-2027 Strategic Plan,
the Board’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi policy is now reflected
in a range of forthcoming initiatives including the:
• Tangata whenua psychotherapist hui. A hui for
tangata whenua psychotherapists is scheduled for
February 2024 (with a hui and a noho marae on
Saturday 24th Feb). Tangata whenua
psychotherapists have already been invited to
attend, and registrations are currently being
received. The hui will be at the Whaiora Marae in
Otara, Manukau, in collaboration with Mana
Whenua, Te Rūnanga o Waka Oranga, and the
Board’s Māori board members: Cinnamon Boreham,
Michelle Amopiu and Juanita Hudson.
• Review of the Cultural Competencies. The
planned review of the Cultural Competencies is
scheduled for 2024.
• Annual CPDs. For the 2023-2024 year onwards,
psychotherapists will be asked to identify a Te Tiriti
o Waitangi goal in their CPDs. (see next section)

Each year, at the time of the renewal of Annual
Practising Certificates, it is expected that previous
year’s CPD plans will have been completed. The
completion of your 2022-2023 CPD should:
a) have been discussed with your supervisor;
and
b) include your reflections on how your areas
of focus have contributed towards your
practise.
Looking ahead, Psychotherapists should (if not
already) be formulating their goals for their 2023-
2024 CPD. The CPD process must be recorded
through the MyPBANZ Psychotherapist login: see
the ‘CPD’ heading on the home page of your

Please note: From 2023-2024 onwards, there is a
requirement to complete a Te Tiriti o Waitangi goal.
Unlike the Standards or the Competencies, there
are no prescribed areas of focus. This is because
each person will be at a different stage of their
journey. There are several courses and online
modules available for reference on the Board’s
website.

of location for your workplace please don’t forget to
edit your details through your MyPBANZ account.
By ensuring we have your correct details, you will
not only receive all communications from the
Board, this will help the Board ensure that its
workforce data is valid.
Holiday season office closure
The Board’s office will be closed for the holiday period
- from 12 noon, Friday 22 December 2023 until
8:30am Monday 8 January 2024.
