Introductory Message!

Welcome to TLE 7/8 – AFA (Crop Production)!

The TLE 7/8 – AFA (Crop Production) Learning Activity Sheet is a product
of the collaborative efforts of the Schools Division of Himamaylan City and DepEd
Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning
Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to guide the learning facilitators
(teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The TLE 7/8 – AFA (Crop Production) Learning Activity Sheet is self-
directed instructional materials aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing
activities at their own pace and time using the contextualized resources in the
community. This will also assist the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills,
knowledge and attitudes for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TLE 7/8 – AFA (Crop Production) Activity Sheet will help you facilitate
the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and
learner. This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease
the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TLE 7/8 – AFA (Crop Production) Activity Sheet is developed to help
you continue learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the
agreed schedule.

Garden Plots Lay-outing

I. Learning Competency with Code

Layout garden plots (TLE_AFAC9-12ID-0f-g-6)
 Design farm plans and layouts according to crop grown
 Follow strictly planting system and practices according to approved
cultural practices
 Interpret irrigation system plan according to established procedures
 Differentiate designs of irrigation systems

II. Background Information for Learners

Lay-outing is important in crop production for it deals with how the

position of plants in the field are being located. There are different types of garden
layout that we can consider, all we need to do is to have a good planning. Lay-
outing requires good planning because a well-organized farm will have less pest
problem and expenses with maximum yields.

In preparing farm plan, consider the following factors:

1. If the garden site is gently sloping, the plants should be in a row across the
slope to avoid erosion.
2. Plants need energy from the sun. In order to capture the maximum amount of
sunlight, crops should be planted in a row from north to south direction.
3. Separate tall from low-growing plants.
4. Crops that grow the whole season should be placed in one area.
5. The rows should be straight. Provide enough space between rows for easier
cultivation.
6. Early maturing plants should be placed in one area.
7. Indicate the location of the fence, water sources, and irrigation ditches or
drainage.
8. If your garden is limited, plant the long maturing crops between the early
maturing crops so that when the early maturing plants are harvested, the
remaining crops will have enough space.
9. Separate the soft-stemmed vegetables, bushy vegetables, vine vegetables
and trees vegetables.

1
Common Garden Layout for Growing Vegetables

Vertical Growing vegetable gardens. These designs are

intended for garden with limited to no traditional garden space.

Block style garden layout is also known as close row or wide

row planting. This design maximizes yields compare to a
traditional row style garden. The size of the bed should be 3-4
feet wide with any desired length with 18-24 inches space
between two beds as walkways during weeding, harvesting, and
replanting.
Square foot garden plots generally setting up series of 4 x 4
squares with strings or wood attached to the frame to divide the
bed into equal square foot sections. Usually vine plants are
placed in the back portion of the grid with a trellis to allow the
vine plants to climb.

Four-square layout is created by straight paths, one leading

from the garden gate to the front entry of the house, and other
crossing it at a 90-degree angle.

Raised bed or containers this design is suitable for those who

have limited space or even inadequate soil resources. This
method is done by planting vegetable plants in a raised bed or
container.

Single row is the most basic garden layout consist of straight

long rows from north to south.

Types of Cropping System/ Common Practices in Planting Crops

Monocrop is a practice of planting only one crop the whole year or absence of
rotation

Intercropping is a practice of growing plants that maximize the vacant space

between rows when the main crop is not fully developed

Relay Cropping is a special version of double cropping wherein the second crop
is planted into the first crop before the first crop is harvested.

Crop Rotation is a practice of growing different types of crops in the same field
across a sequenced of growing seasons.
