ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1. Identify and explain how students will benefit from the reforms initiated by the government
in the Department of Education.
To begin with the reforms that were initiated by the government in the Department of
Education, lets trace back to the trifocalization of the Philippine education system. With this
reform, it greatly impacted the distribution the works on the different agencies, mainly to DepEd
for basic education, CHED for higher education, and TESDA for technical and vocational
training. Likewise, it provides more efficient and organize roles for these programs, where they
are given specific task to enhance the level of education of every student that is open to
everyone, say in TESDA, it opens a lot of opportunity for out-of-school youth or people who
wants to have a proper training and knowledge for practical courses, this is a great way for them
to take advantage and enroll themselves in order for them to be equipped with proper knowledge.
With the deterioration of our educational system has prompted the government to conduct
an examination of our educational system. The next big step in our education reform is the
implementation or institutionalization of the 12-curriculum program, which added kindergarten
and two more years of senior high school to the basic education program. This decision was
made because of the following reasons:
1. The Philippines is the only country in Asia with a 10-year basic education
2. Poor quality education
3. Too many non-practical subjects
4. Not prepared for college education
5. Too young for labor force
6. No global recognition
Thus, this K-12 program highlighted the following features that would help our students be
global competitive:
1. Strengthening of the Kindergarten in the Philippines
2. Making curriculum relevant to learners
3. Building proficiency
4. Ensuring integrated and seamless/unified learning
5. Gearing up for the future
6. Nurturing the holistically developed Filipino.
2. What are the important characteristics of an effective school leader?

A successful organization depends on its leadership, which is essential component to any

organization. In the same way, school leaders’ primary responsibility is to take charge of the
management of the school. Furthermore, being an effective teacher and leader at the same time
requires passion, perseverance, and competency, not just to influence students but also to make
meaningful changes in their lives while attending school.

The following characteristics or aspects of a school leader were highlighted and

emphasized by Christine (2009):

1. First, they must possess a deep understanding of how to support teachers and be
careful and sensitive to the needs of the teachers.
2. Next is managing the curriculum in ways that promote student learning—
considering the learners different learning styles and strategies that will suit them.
3. Lastly, developing the ability to transform schools into more effective
organizations to foster powerful teaching and learning for all the students—
transformational leadership is one of the leadership theories that requires leaders
to have passion and energy to achieve great things.
