Jose Rizal did not finish writing "Makamisa" (also known as "Sobre la indolencia de los

Filipinos") because he was a prolific writer and had numerous other literary and political works
to focus on during his short life. "Makamisa" was intended to be a sequel to his novel "Noli Me
Tangere" and explore the issues of Filipino indolence and social injustice. However, Rizal's
active involvement in the Philippine Revolution and his desire to bring about social change
through various means likely led him to prioritize other works and activities, ultimately
preventing him from completing "Makamisa" before his execution in 1896.

In conclusion, Although Makamisa was supposedly a sequel to Rizal’s El Filibusterismo,

his style of writing on Makamisa was far different from the preceding two novels. He attempted
writing in Filipino and shifted his central topic from politics to Filipino custom. Rizal aimed to
make a change in Filipino’s national language. He stepped back from writing anything political
and diverted his subject to the lives of Filipinos.Even though he wrote Makamisa with a distinct
purpose from his other two novels, I believe Makamisa would be equally impactful and
influential if only he could finish it. Still, Ocampo successfully brought Rizal’s alternative outlook
of life to light through his books about Makamisa and other writings of Rizal. In Makamisa, we
can see the potentiality of the Filipino language in realistic fiction. Also, we could feel the efforts
Dr. Jose Rizal made to develop our language, even though writing in Spanish was his forte.
After my in-depth data gathering. I think Rizal has three purposes of why he wrote the third
unpublished book. First, he wanted to alter the Las Filipinas’ national language from Spanish to
Filipino. It is the reason why Rizal strived to write the novel in Tagalog. Secondly, Rizal wanted
to avoid criticism, so he wrote a humorous book centralizing Filipino values and avoided political
topics. Del Pilar’s criticism of Rizal’s second novel also moved Rizal to write his third novel.
Thirdly. Rizal wanted to rebuild the cultural identity of Filipinos. In Makamisa, Rizal highlighted
and talked more about the morals, beliefs, and traditions of Filipinos.
