Concentration of Different Solutions

PHET Simulation Link: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/concentration/latest/concentration_en.html

Procedures:

Trial 1: DRINK MIX

1. Fill up the tank up to ½ liters, drag the purple
concentration meter into the tank as shown.
2. Don’t use the shaker (solid) instead use the dropper
(solution) for adding the solute.
3. Add drops of drink mix until it hits the 6th line of the
tank as shown below.
4. After adding the “DRINK MIX” solute, record the
concentration detected by the concentration meter in
the
given table. Record also the changes that happened when the
solute was added (e.g. change in color)
5. After recoding the concentration of drink mix, press the
reset button.

Trial 2: COBALT (II) NITRATE

1. Fill up the tank up to ½ liters, drag the purple concentration
meter as shown.
2. Add drops of cobalt (II) nitrate until it hits the 7th line of the
tank as shown below.
3. After adding the “COBALT (II) NITRATE” solute, record
the concentration detected by the concentration meter in the
given table. Record also the changes that happened when the
solute was added (e.g. change in color)
4. After recoding the concentration of drink mix, press the
reset button.

Trial 3: COBALT (II) CHLORIDE

1. Fill up the tank up to ½ liters, drag the purple concentration
meter as shown.
2. Add drops of cobalt (II) nitrate until it hits the 8th line of the
tank as shown below.
3. After adding the “COBALT (II) CHLORIDE” solute, record
the concentration detected by the concentration meter in the
given table. Record also the changes that happened when the
solute was added (e.g. change in color)
4. After recoding the concentration of drink mix, press the
reset button.

Trial 4: POTASSIUM DICHROMATE

1. Fill up the tank up to ½ liters, drag the purple concentration
meter as shown.
2. Add drops of potassium dichromate until it hits the 9th line
of the tank as shown below.
3. After adding the “POTASSIUM DICHROMATE” solute,
record the concentration detected by the concentration meter
in the given table. Record also the changes that happened
when the solute was added (e.g. change in color)
4. After recoding the concentration of drink mix, press the
reset button.

Trial 5: POTASSIUM CHROMATE

1. Fill up the tank up to ½ liters, drag the purple
concentration meter as shown.
2. Add drops of potassium chromate until it hits the 10th
(1L) line of the tank as shown below.
3. After adding the “POTASSIUM CHROMATE” solute,
record the concentration detected by the concentration
meter in the given table. Record also the changes that
happened when the solute was added (e.g. change in
color)
4. After recoding the concentration of drink mix, press the
reset button.

PART II: Computation of Solutions

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following questions. Show your computations and BOX the final
answer. (Rx3)

1. What is the mass percent of potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) in a solution that is made by
dissolving 5.78 g of K2Cr2O7 in 10 g of water?

2. How many grams of sodium and water are needed to make 400.0 g of 30% solution?

3. Determine the percent volume of solution made by combining 70 mL of ethanol with enough
water to produce 100 mL of the solution.

4. A solution of 752g had consisted of 500g solvent, identify the value of the missing solute. After
identifying the missing solute, what is the percent mass of the solution?

5. Rubbing alcohol is always known to have 70% isopropyl alcohol solution, the rest are water. For
example, a 500mL of rubbing alcohol is present, calculate the percent volume of the remaining
water component.

6. What is the concentration in percent mass/volume of 150 mL of solution that contains 50 grams
of solute?
