ACTIVITY NO.8
IDENTIFICATION & CLASSIFICATION OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Learning Objectives
At the end of the activity, you will be able to:
• Differentiate the solubility of organic and inorganic compounds.
• Enumerate the organic and inorganic compounds based from the ingredient or formulation labels of
cosmetic products found in your home.
• Classify the type of compounds of the given products with their chemical or structural formula.

Materials
• Pen, Module 8 Lecture Notes, 2 transparent glasses, tablespoon, water, table salt, cooking or vegetable
oil, cosmetic products (available at your home)

Introduction
Compounds can be identified and classified as to inorganic compounds or organic compounds. Each
type of compound has their own characteristic properties and distinct chemical or structural formula to represent
the type of atoms or elements present. One of the easiest ways to differentiate the property of each type of
compound is know their solubility. Solubility is the ability of a solid, liquid, or gaseous chemical substance
(referred to as the solute) to dissolve in solvent (usually a liquid) and form a solution. To be specific, if a solid
solute dissolved in a liquid solvent, it is described as soluble. If a solid solute did not dissolve in a liquid solvent,
it is termed as insoluble. In a liquid to liquid solubility, the specific terms that will be used in describing solubility
will vary. If a liquid solute dissolved in a liquid solvent, it is described as miscible. If a liquid solute did not dissolve
in a liquid solvent, it is termed as immiscible.
Inorganic compounds and organic compounds are present in different pharmaceutical, household, cosmetic,
and industrial products. We can identify them by looking their chemical names or chemical formula stated in their
containers or packaging. As you progress in this activity, you will learn how to differentiate, identify and classify
inorganic and organic compounds.

A. Solubility between Organic and Inorganic Compounds

Procedure:
1. Prepare 2 transparent glasses, tablespoon, water, table salt, and cooking or vegetable oil.
2. Place water in both glasses and make sure it is ¾ full. Take note, they should have the same volume.
3. Add 1 tablespoonful of table salt on the first glass and stir it using the spoon for 3 minutes.
4. Add 1 tablespoonful of oil on the second glass and stir it using the spoon for 3 minutes.
5. Observe the results.
6. Take a picture of your output (Picture A) and make sure to also take a picture of yourself with the
output (Picture B).

B. Identification or Organic and Inorganic Compounds

Procedure:
1. Find any cosmetic products in your home (e.g. perfume, shampoo, soap, hair wax, lipsticks, and etc.).
2. After finding random cosmetic products, select only 3 products.
3. Find the label of the ingredients or formulations of the selected cosmetic products.

4. Write the name of the cosmetic products that you selected (refer to the activity sheet).
5. Enumerate the inorganic compounds and organic compounds that you can find in the ingredient or
formulation label.
6. Take a picture of each cosmetic product that you selected (Picture A) and make sure to also take a
picture of yourself with each product (Picture B).

C. Classification of Compounds
Procedure:
1. Read and refer to your Module 8 Lecture Notes.
2. Classify the following products as to inorganic or inorganic compound in the activity sheet with their
chemical or structural formula
3. Write “Inorganic” if the given compound is an inorganic compound and write the name of the family
of the organic compound (eg. ether, ester, alcohol, alkane, and etc.) if the given compound is an
organic compound.

ACTIVITY SHEET

A. Solubility between Organic and Inorganic Compounds.

1. Documentation: Place the pictures instructed from the procedure.

PICTURE A PICTURE B

2. Describe the solubility of table salt in water based from the experiment.
_______________________________________________________________________________
The table salt is soluble because i can observe that it mixes well with the water and it became a
homogenous mixture.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________.

3. Describe the solubility of cooking or vegetable oil in water based from the experiment.
_______________________________________________________________________________
I can see no solubility on the cooking oil because I observe that it can mix but i can clearly see that it will
_______________________________________________________________________________
not go with the water and after i mix it it will go above the water because of its density.
_______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________.

4. Which of the compounds used is an organic and an inorganic?

_______________________________________________________________________________
The salt is inorganic and the oil is organic.

5. What is your conclusion of the experiment?

_______________________________________________________________________________
Therefore I conclude that the oil is not soluble and that salt is soluble. Oil also can float in
water because of its density. Organic compounds are mostly not soluble.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________.

6. Aside from solubility, what are the other ways to differentiate organic and inorganic
compounds?

_______________________________________________________________________________
The presence of carbons in its compound. Inorganic chemistry includes acid-base reactions,
_______________________________________________________________________________
displacement reactions, redox reactions etc. Organic chemistry includes reactions that depend on the
functional group present on the compound.
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________.

7. Do all organic or inorganic compounds follow all their characteristic properties? Why or why
not?
_______________________________________________________________________________
Yes hey follow all their characteristics property because there is no clear distinction in the chemical or
_______________________________________________________________________________
physical properties among organic and inorganic molecules
_______________________________________________________________________________
