Lab Report: Catalysts and Chemical Reactions

I. Introduction:
- The catalyst is a substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction
without being used up or changed very much.

- Catalysts can increase reaction rates by bringing together reactants and

making it easier for them to react.

- Enzymes are one type of catalysts found in living things.

- In this lab, you will observe hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as it decomposes

(breaks down) into oxygen (O2) and water (H2O).

II. Objective:

The purpose of the experiment is to explore the function of a catalyst in a

chemical reaction.
III. Materials:

- Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)

- Yeast as a catalyst
- 2 beakers
- Graduated cylinder
- Stirring rod
- Marker
Safety Precautions:
- Wear safety goggles, gloves, and a lab apron always during the experiment.
- Handle chemicals and glassware with care and follow proper safety guidelines.

IV. Procedure:
- Put on safety goggles, gloves, and a lab apron.

1
- Label the first beaker “Without Catalyst” and the second beaker “With
Catalyst” using a marker.

- Measure 50 mL of hydrogen peroxide using a graduated cylinder and pour it

into each beaker.

- Add a small amount of yeast only to the "With Catalyst" beaker and stir gently
using the stirring rod.

- Record and observe any visible changes in the beakers over the course of 5
minutes using the table below.

V. Data Analysis and Conclusion:

1. Write the balanced chemical equation of the decomposition of hydrogen
peroxide?

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposes (breaks down) into oxygen (O2) and
water (H2O).
