ACTIVITY 1 - LET’S DO REDOX!

Rationale of the Home-Based Laboratory Activity

One of the topics that appears to require hands-on experience is oxidation

and reduction reactions. In relation to this, the home-based activity will provide the
learners with more knowledge in real-world experience.

ACTIVITY 1- LET’S DO REDOX!

Introduction

On our previous lesson we discussed the concept of oxidation-reduction

reaction, wherein oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction is define as a type of chemical
reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two species. An oxidation-
reduction reaction is any chemical reaction in which the oxidation number of a
molecule, atom, or ion change by gaining or losing an electron. Redox reactions are
common and vital to some of the basic functions of life, including photosynthesis,
respiration, combustion, and corrosion or rusting.

In this activity you will be able to perform hands-on experience and will be to
explain oxidation/reduction reactions.

Objectives

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Explain oxidation/reduction reactions (STEM_BIO11/12-Ii-j-18)

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this home-based laboratory activity, you should be able to:
1. Explain the oxidation and reduction reaction.
2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the oxidation-reduction
reaction.
3. Perform the home-based laboratory experiment.

Materials

2 cups Vinegar 1 Stirring Rod or Table spoon

10 pcs 1peso old coins Forceps
Tissue paper or Used paper 2 tbsp Salt
Marker or Pentel pen
2 Beaker or Glass

2
Procedures

PRECAUTION!
To avoid breakage, use the glass with caution. To avoid eye contact,
please wear eyeglasses, goggles, or a face shield.

SET UP A
1. Place 5 pieces (1-peso coin) old coins inside the beaker or glass
2. Add 1 cup of vinegar in the glass.
3. Add 2 tablespoon salt
4. Stir and Set aside for 5 minutes
5. Remove the coins from the solution with the used of forceps
6. Wash the coins with water and placed it on the tissue with the label rinsed
7. Set aside for 2 minutes. Observe what happen.

SET UP B
1. Place 5 pieces 1-peso old coins inside the beaker or glass
2. Add 1 cup of vinegar in the glass.
3. Add 2 tablespoon salt
4. Set aside for 5 minutes
5. Remove the coins from the vinegar
6. Placed it on the tissue with the label unrinsed (note: do not wash the coins)
7. Set aside for 2 minutes. Observe what happen.

Observation

Write your observation in the two experimental set up.

Questions

1. What did you observed from the old coins soak in a solution with vinegar and
salt after rinsing, after 2 minutes rinsing not rinsed with water?

Generalization

Guide question:
• Differentiate oxidation and reduction reaction.
Answer: Oxidation is the gain of oxygen. Reduction is the loss of oxygen. The
terms oxidation and reduction can be defined as the addition or removal of oxygen
from a compound. While this is not the most comprehensive definition, as discussed
below, it is the most easily remembered.
