In this activity, you will think as food scientists working in the laboratory of the MY
Choco-drinks company. The manager of the company wants to find out about the
solubility of the different ingredients that can be used to make a mixer for chocolate
drinks. Your task is to report on this information to the manager.

Your report must include a conclusion about the solubility of the different ingredients in
different drinks, so that the company can decide how best to make the chocolate mixer.

Safety!
In this experiment you will be using food items which you must not taste or eat. Be sure
to carry out risk/safety and environmental impact assessments and make sure that your
teacher checks your design before you begin.

Assessment:
Criterion B: Inquiring & Designing
i. outline an appropriate problem or research question to be tested by a scientific
investigation
ii. outline a testable prediction using scientific reasoning
iii. outline how to manipulate the variables, and outline how data will be collected
iv. design scientific investigations

Criterion C – in Part C
MYP 1 SCIENCE ACTIVITY
Use the Experiment Inquiry Cycle below to draft your design.

1- Brainstorm a list of all the

variables that might affect the
way the solute dissolves in the
solvent.

6-Discuss: was your

prediction correct? was 2- Discuss your list with me
your experiment valid?did and choose one variable that
you answer the inquire you can easily change and one
question? How can you that you can easily measure.
improve this experiment? Write an inquiry question for
your investigation.

5- Organize your results in

a clear table that has titles
for each variables and units 3- How will the independent
of measurments you used. variable affect the dependent
variable? State a prediction
4- Design an about what you expect to
investigation that will happen in the inverstigation.
all you to control the explain your prediction with a
independent variable reason.
and measure the
dependent variable.
Check your design
with your teacher
before beginning!

Look at the ingredients in the figure below and choose ONE solvent and ONE solute from
the ingredients.

Overview of the activity!

Task Done Checked by

teacher
1 Outline the aim of your experiment in the form of an
inquiry question
2 Use the scientific investigation cycle shown below to
help you design a method to answer the inquiry
question.
3 In your method, identify the independent variable
and the dependent variable.
4 State what other variables could affect the results,
but which you will control by keeping the same.
5 Predict what you think will happen in your
experiment, and explain why you think this with
scientific reasoning.
Check your work with the teacher, make sure you
have all the necessary ingredients and tools to carry
the experiment.
6 Do your experiment- Make sure you have all your
materials and tools- collect all the data accurately in
your journal.
7 Organize your results in a table. Make sure your
table has headings that clearly show the variables
you used, and any units of measurements.
8 Write your conclusion and evaluation of the
experiment
9 Fill self-evaluation rubrics for criterion B and C

Use the template to help structure your writing.

MYP 1 SCIENCE ACTIVITY
Inquiry question
To investigate how _____________________ [property] changes in different materials.

Background: Use this section to collect any background research you have made – for example,
on the way the property is measured, what materials demonstrate the different ‘extremes’ of this
property, and so on. Explain why it is important or useful to investigate into this.
