CHAPTER: 01

1.1 INTRODUCTION :

Now a days peoples are want to go different places for relaxation or recreation. As, there are not
so many available hotels & Resorts for large number of peoples. In a vacation, Most of the
peoples will go different tourist places for relaxation or recreation and have to be faced embracing
situation if there is not available room in Hotel & Resort. It will be overcome if the Resort has
online booking system. For this reason we think that if the Resort Booking and availability
checking system we can provide the customers through Online, then it will be more convenient
and helpful for a customer perspective to Book/Reserve a Room or checking the price, availability
and other facilities to compare with the other available Resorts at the same places. Moreover,
these types of Online Resort Booking system like “Resort Management System” can also help the
Peoples who are basically like to confirm the booking before the traveling to minimize the hassle
during the traveling. On the other side, If the Hotel Management adopt the Online “Resort
Management System” then the management can able to see the availability of the rooms an able to
give a prompt response to the customers through the Online system. Moreover, Management also
get a view about the Daily/Monthly income from tourist and also able to compare with the costing
to find out the Net Income. The Hotel Management also can give the customers the facility to
provide feedback/Review or Rating system at the end of the tour. Throughout the Rating the
Management can identify that in which categories they need to improve to provide better facility
to the customers. Also, if the Customers are provide good review and the reviews are stored and
visible to other customer through the online system then other Customers also feel interested to
come to the resort.

1.2 BACKGROUND STUDY:

Early Days of Resort Management:

Before the digital age, resort operations were dominated by manual work. Staff relied on paper logs,
spreadsheets, and guest folios to manage reservations, track inventory, and handle finances. This system
was prone to errors, lacked real-time data, and offered limited insights into guest behavior or revenue
trends.

The Dawn of Technology:

The 1980s saw the introduction of computers, paving the way for the first "Property Management
Systems" (PMS) for hotels and resorts. These early systems focused on automating core tasks like room
reservations, guest accounting, and basic reporting. While a significant improvement over manual
processes, they were often clunky and lacked integration with other aspects of resort operations.

The Internet Revolution:

1
The late 1990s witnessed the rise of the internet, fundamentally changing the hospitality landscape.
Online travel agencies (OTAs) and booking platforms emerged, giving guests immediate access to resort
information and reservation capabilities. To adapt to this new reality, RMS evolved to include internet
booking engines (IBE), channel management tools, and online marketing functionalities.

Modern Resort Management Systems:

Today's RMS are comprehensive software solutions encompassing various modules:

 Reservations: Manage online and offline bookings, cancellations, modifications, and waitlists.
 Inventory: Track room availability, rates, types, amenities, and equipment.
 Guest Management: Maintain guest profiles, preferences, loyalty program information, and
communication history.
 Revenue Management: Analyze market trends, competitor pricing, and occupancy rates to dynamically
adjust room rates and maximize revenue.
 Operations: Schedule housekeeping, maintenance, laundry services, and activities.
 Point-of-Sale (POS): Integrate with on-site restaurants, bars, and shops for seamless transaction
processing.
 Marketing and Sales: Manage website content, online promotions, packages, and social media
marketing.
 Reporting and Analytics: Generate comprehensive reports on occupancy, revenue, guest
demographics, and performance metrics.

2
1.3 RESEARCH GAP:

While RMS have significantly improved resort operations, several research gaps offer opportunities for
further advancement and innovation:

1. Integration and Interoperability:

 Integration: Often, data silos exist between different modules within an RMS or between the RMS and
other software used by the resort. This hinders efficiency and limits valuable insights.
 Standardized data formats: Lack of standardized data formats across different RMS and hospitality
software makes integration and data exchange challenging.

2. Personalization and Guest Experience:

 Underutilization of guest data: While RMS collect guest data, fully leveraging it for personalized
recommendations, tailored packages, and dynamic content remains largely unexplored.
 Limited guest engagement tools: Beyond basic communication channels, RMS lack advanced tools for
personalized interactions, real-time feedback, and gamification for enhanced guest engagement.

3. Sustainability and Environmental Impact:

 Limited sustainability features: Few RMS offer tools for tracking and managing resource consumption
(energy, water) or optimizing operations for environmental impact reduction.
 Incomplete guest sustainability preferences: Integrating guest preferences for eco-friendly options
(e.g., linen change frequency, towel reuse) into the RMS could promote sustainable practices.

4. Revenue Management and Pricing Optimization:

 Static pricing models: Most RMS employ dynamic pricing based on seasonality and occupancy, but
incorporating factors like weather, local events, and competitor pricing in real-time remains complex.
 Advanced revenue forecasting: More accurate forecasting models incorporating diverse data sources
could further optimize pricing strategies and revenue generation.

Addressing these research gaps through innovative solutions can lead to:

 Enhanced operational efficiency and cost savings.

 Highly personalized and memorable guest experiences.
 Reduced environmental impact and sustainable practices.
 Optimized revenue generation and pricing strategies.
 Improved competitiveness in the dynamic hospitality market.
3
By investigating these research gaps and developing new solutions, researchers and developers can
contribute to the continuous evolution and improvement of resort management systems, ultimately
benefiting both resort operators and guests.

1.4 PROBLEM STATEMENT

A general problem statement about resort management systems wouldn't be very useful. To formulate a
strong and specific problem statement, I need more information about the specific area of the RMS you're
interested in. Here are some examples of how your problem statement can be shaped depending on your
focus:

Guest Experience:

 Problem: Traditional RMS lack advanced tools for personalized guest communication and
engagement, leading to generic experiences and missed opportunities to build loyalty.
 Proposed solution: Develop an AI-powered guest engagement platform within the RMS that leverages
guest data and preferences to provide real-time recommendations, gamified experiences, and personalized
interactions.

Revenue Management:

 Problem: Current dynamic pricing models often overlook factors like local events, competitor
pricing, and weather patterns, leading to suboptimal revenue generation.
 Proposed solution: Integrate real-time data sources and advanced machine learning algorithms into the
RMS to develop a more sophisticated pricing model that maximizes revenue while remaining competitive
and guest-friendly.

Sustainability:

 Problem: Resort operations generate significant environmental impact, and existing RMS offer limited
tools for tracking and managing resource consumption or promoting sustainable guest practices.
 Proposed solution: Develop an eco-conscious module for the RMS that integrates smart sensors, tracks
resource usage, suggests optimization strategies, and allows guests to express their sustainability
preferences for a more environmentally responsible resort experience.
