TITLE
Analysis of KANKAUNG Substation Earthing System and Simulation with
ETAP

Introduction
Earthing system for substation is actually imperative for the electric power system
stability and to maintain suitable step and touch potential through the earthing grid. The main
essence of earthing is to provide safety and a steady distribution of the voltage on the surface
of the earth at any substation through earth grid in some cases a return circuit of load currents
occur. The performance of earthing grid system is very important to ensure the safety
environment for the human and electrical devices. Electrical fault in substation can cause a
variety of factors, including equipment failure, improper earthing, human error, and
environmental factors. When electrical equipment is properly grounded, currents flow
through the grounding system instead of through people, objects and animals, preventing
from electrical shocks. There are several types of earthing systems used in substations, each
with its own advantages and disadvantages, the choice of earthing system depends on factors
such as the voltage level, the type of electrical equipment and specific requirements of the
electrical system. This thesis will analyze the actual design and performance of
KANKAUNG substation in Meiktila.
By using ETAP software, the existing substation can be checked weather it is within
the limit of operational standard or not. In addition, it can be used to design optimum earthing
system for the future. A good earthing system can provide the ability of carrying the electric
current into the earth under normal and fault conditions without exceeding any operating and
equipment limits. It can ensure that the person in vicinity of grounded facilities is not exposed
to the danger of electric shock.

Aims
 To analyze the background theory and the working principle of the earthing grid
 To study the grounding design and performance of KANKAUNG substation
 To investigate the calculation process of the step voltage, touch voltage, GPR and soil
resistivity of that substation
 To simulate the model of earthing grid in ETAP software
 To check the result of calculation and simulation
Methodology
Detail analysis of EHV (500 kV) earthing system will be discussed in this thesis and
some of them are;
 Resistivity of soil and its layer
 Shape of earth grid and type of earth rods
 Choice of conductor and electrode size for Earthing Grid
 Collecting data of KANKAUNG substation for calculation processes
 Calculation of touch and step voltage with associated standard
 Calculation of grid potential rise (GPR)
 Calculation of maximum grid current
 Modelling earthing in ETAP software

Expected Outcomes
In this thesis, performance analysis of the grounding system for high voltage 500 kV
KANKAUNG substation in MEIKTILA will be analyzed and designed simulation will be
made with data obtained from KANKAUNG substation by ETAP software. By using
simulation software, the calculated result and simulation result can be compared to find out
what is the difference between them.
