Applications for Migration Overview

Migration to the cloud, also known as modernization, is a complex process that differs from application
to application. One of the key strategies to help you transform your legacy (usually monolithic)
applications to take advantage of hybrid cloud is lift and shift.
Lift and Shift
The lift and shift modernization model can be considered a first step to cloud-native development. For
example, after implementing lift and shift, a client may decide to:
 Containerize existing monolithic workloads.
 Deploy the workload on a Platform as a Service (PaaS).
 Keep external integrations and data on the legacy platform.
IBM Cloud for Financial Services provides database and other platform services to monoliths that are
migrated using lift and shift.

Benefits of Using Lift and Shift

Fast, Cost-effective, Lift and shift enables a quick migration, without dedicating a large team to the
Minimally Disruptive task. An on-premise application can remain in place during the migration,
Migration guaranteeing no interruption of service, and the application experience remains
identical to users.

Alternatives to Lift and Shift

Broadly speaking, there are two other types of cloud migration to consider.

Platform as a Service (PaaS) Software as a Service (SaaS)

 You might completely redesign the  You’ll most likely need to adopt the SaaS

 Compared to lift and shift, PaaS migration is
more costly, labor-intensive, and time-
consuming.
 However, it enables your application to
take better advantage of cloud-native
operations automation, developer
productivity, security, resiliency, etc.

When does Lift and Shift make more sense than a PaaS migration?
 On-premises infrastructure costs are skyrocketing, but the organization is not ready to rearchitect
its applications.
 The organization wants to migrate off-the-shelf applications.
 The organization needs less-costly, more-scalable backup and recovery.

Important to note:
Consider using VMware HCX when using the lift and shift migration pattern for VMware workloads.
VMware HCX simplifies the migration process for VMware workloads. Rapidly moving to cloud by
migrating existing applications is an advantage of lift and shift under the VMware architecture.
VMware with elasticity requirements is a good workload option for lift and shift to a cloud platform
with optimum efficiency.

Cloud Workload Assessment

The cloud workload assessment is a defined service offering from the IBM Cloud Garage®. It is a tool
organizations can use to explore the current environment and prioritize focus areas to enable and
accelerate cloud adoption.

Wave planning in the cloud workload assessment establishes the sequence of workloads to transform,
with constraints and dependencies.

How Cloud Workload Assessment Fits into the Cloud Adoption and Transformation
Journey

Evaluating Migration Complexity

Application architecture is an important consideration when planning migration waves. The following
diagram shows the possible complexity level of several architecture types.

Exposing Legacy APIs

The strangler modernization pattern is commonly used to incrementally modernize a legacy application
by replacing functionality in small chunks over time, until the legacy application is fully replaced and no
longer needed. Using this approach reduces the overall risk of introducing a new implementation while
providing a controlled mechanism to implement new functionality and easily roll back changes if needed.

Exposing API Functional Requirements

When delivering financial technology services by APIs, ensure the following functional requirements are
addressed:
1. Ability to provide RESTful APIs
2. Access to the API with Authentication and authorization services

Cloud Storage Options

IBM Cloud provides three types of cloud storage: object storage, block storage, and file storage. One
important difference between object storage and block storage is how each handles metadata.
In object storage, metadata can be customized to include additional, detailed information about the data
files stored in the object. For example, metadata accompanying a video file could be customized to tell
where the video was made, the type of camera used to shoot it, and even what subjects were captured in
each frame. In block storage, metadata is limited to the block address.

Data Governance Capability and Risk Migration

When an organization avoids governance, it risks a financial exposure. In today's world, you must be
able to use data to prove business facts. Take a disciplined approach to data governance to avoid
failures and other risks that are associated with adhering to regulatory and statutory requirements.

A good security governance model that extends an existing security policy onto cloud-based systems
enforces the IT security policy through security controls, meets industry compliance regulations, and
automates compliance validation. Below, you will find the main capabilities of data governance.

Readiness Assessment
Readiness Assessment is the second stage of the cloud adoption and transformation journey. In this
stage, a minimum viable product (MVP) is established.

IBM Cloud for Financial Services Advantages

When performing a readiness assessment for moving a financial services application to the cloud,
consider the following advantages of using IBM Cloud for Financial Services:

 The FIPS 140-2 Level 4 encryption offered by IBM Hyper Protect Crypto Services allows sensitive data
to be migrated to the cloud.
 The IBM Cloud Satellite service enables the creation of hybrid environments where data and customer
applications can still run on-premises.

Creating a Mountable File System Volume in Red Hat OpenShift

You can use Software Defined Storage with Portworx or IBM Cloud Object Storage to create a mountable
file system volume in Red Hat OpenShift in an multizone region on IBM Cloud.

Analyze Pain and Understand Gain

When evaluating an existing compute environment with many components, it is important to understand
the value of moving to cloud and understand the "pain," or effort, which is associated with each
workload.

Your organization must establish a quantifiable measurement to gauge the pain or gain. This
measurement is further dependent on individual workload characteristics and includes factors such as
platform type, unique hardware considerations, stability, and business criticality. IBM uses a standard
list of attributes that are further informed by the organization's attributes and objectives. Organizations
might establish their own measurements such as:

Possible Measurements for Gain Possible Measurements for Pain

 Faster time to market  Unsupported software or operating
 Reduced time and work to deploy and systems
administer a new build  Complex code that requires rework
 Increased frequency of updates or releases  Level of risk
 Increased user satisfaction
 Reduced effort to manage the compute
infrastructure

Create the Grid

After workload attributes are collected and can be measured, explore prioritization in the context of
plotting across a gain-versus-pain grid. This activity helps you decide which workloads can be grouped
into waves of effort. A gain-versus-pain grid also informs your sequence as your plan evolves into
analyzing your data and including stakeholders.

In this example

Typically, the

Technology, Dependencies, Scalability

Additional considerations when performing a workload assessment for migrating to the cloud are the
existing technology, dependencies, and how much scalability is required.
